Green approach to extract bioactive compounds from orange peel employing hydrophilic and hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents

A. Vinas-Ospino et al.

Summary: Consumer interest in natural products with health benefits has led to research on sustainable techniques for extracting bioactive compounds from natural resources. In this study, extracts rich in bioactive compounds were obtained from orange peel using novel hydrophilic and hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The extracts were evaluated for their stability, antioxidant capacity, permeability, and biological activity, with promising results. DESs showed potential for extracting both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds from orange peels, making them suitable for inclusion in food formulations and avoiding the need for solvent elimination.

Stability assessment of emulsion of carotenoids extracted from carrot bio-waste in flaxseed oil and its application in food model system

Swati Tiwari et al.

Summary: This research assessed the stability of carotenoid emulsion extracted from carrot-pomace in omega-3 rich flaxseed oil and successfully converted it into freeze-dried powder for use as a natural functional colorant in flavored milk. The study found that the emulsion was stable under various conditions except for specific pH, temperature, and ionic strength. The developed product, with added freeze-dried emulsion, showed improved fat, protein, total solids, carotenoid content, and antioxidant value compared to the control. The research concludes that the carotenoid-rich emulsion can be effectively freeze-dried and used as a natural colorant in flavored milk to enhance its functional attributes.

Summary: Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) composed of choline chloride, sucrose, fructose, glucose, and xylose were used to extract antioxidants from sea knotgrass in this study. The NADES extracts showed higher antioxidant activity compared to conventional solvents, with ChCl:fructose being the most efficient in the radical scavenging assay. The phenolic composition of NADES extracts was less complex but contained similar proportions of major antioxidants like flavonols and flavan-3-ols compared to conventional extracts.
