Apoptotic, Anti-Inflammatory Activities and Interference with the Glucocorticoid Receptor Signaling of Fractions from Pistacia lentiscus L. var. chia Leaves

Foteini D. Kalousi et al.

Summary: This study isolated acetonic extracts of leaves of Pistacia lentiscus L. var. chia and evaluated their cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activities as well as their interference with the glucocorticoid receptor signaling. The results showed that polar fractions exhibited the highest cytotoxicity, while medium-polar fractions demonstrated enhanced glucocorticoid-associated biological activities.

Summary: The prevalence of cardiomyopathy is higher in diabetic patients, yet there are no specific drugs for treating DCM despite decades of investigations. Targeting PPAR alpha activation may be an important strategy in patients with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases.

Antioxidant and Cytoprotective Potential of the Essential Oil Pistacia lentiscus var. chia and Its Major Components Myrcene and α-Pinene

Vasileios Xanthis et al.

Summary: Although mastic oil and its major components did not exhibit significant direct antioxidant activity, they were able to increase mRNA levels of antioxidant response genes, suggesting an indirect antioxidant activity. These substances showed beneficial effects on cell viability and protection against UVB or H2O2-induced oxidative damage, as well as promoting cell migration and wound closure in a dose-dependent manner. Overall, mastic essential oil may exert promising cytoprotective properties through indirect antioxidant mechanisms.

Lupeol and its derivatives as anticancer and anti-inflammatory agents: Molecular mechanisms and therapeutic efficacy

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: Lupeol, a natural triterpenoid found in fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants, exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities including anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Studies have shown that structural modifications to lupeol can lead to stronger bioactivities, such as antiprotozoal or anticancer effects.

Summary: Chios mastic gum, the resinous secretion obtained from the barks of the shrub Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia endemic to the Greek island of Chios, has various medicinal uses, particularly for gastrointestinal disorders. Its biological properties are attributed to triterpenes, with isomasticadienonic acid and masticadienonic acid being major chemical components. However, their isolation for pharmacological studies is challenging due to structural characteristics.

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase in cell metabolism: Roles and mechanisms beyond gluconeogenesis

Shuo Yu et al.

Summary: PCK enzyme plays important roles beyond gluconeogenesis, including in the development of obesity, cardiac hypertrophy, stroke, and cancer. The expression of PCK is precisely controlled by a complex regulatory network involving epigenetic regulation, transcription regulation, and posttranscription regulation. Understanding the regulation of PCK may lead to the development of strategies to treat metabolic dysfunction.
