Protective effect of orange essential oil on the formation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by high-fat diet

Qing-Shan Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that sniffing orange essential oil (OEO) has a protective effect on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) caused by a high-fat diet. It can reduce obesity, liver fat accumulation, and improve antioxidant capacity in mice.

Obesity in children and adolescents: epidemiology, causes, assessment, and management

Hiba Jebeile et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on child and adolescent obesity, including its epidemiology, causes, assessment considerations, and management approaches. Prevalence of obesity had plateaued in high-income countries but increased in low-income and middle-income countries before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, weight gain among children and adolescents has increased during the pandemic. Obesity is associated with various health issues and premature mortality. The development and persistence of obesity can be explained by a bio-socioecological framework. The first-line treatment approaches involve family-based behavioral interventions addressing diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and sleep quality. Additional therapies such as intensive dietary approaches, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery are emerging, but access to them is limited. Personalized treatment approaches and their translation to clinical practice still require further research.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Formula Jian Pi Tiao Gan Yin Reduces Obesity in Mice by Modulating the Gut Microbiota and Fecal Metabolism

Wenchao Dong et al.

Summary: This study employed a murine model induced by high-fat diet to assess the effects of Jian Pi Tiao Gan Yin (JPTGY) on gut microbiota and fecal metabolism. The results showed that JPTGY significantly reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Additionally, JPTGY increased the abundance and diversity of fecal microbiota.

Galactofucan from Laminaria japonica is not degraded by the human digestive system but inhibits pancreatic lipase and modifies the intestinal microbiota

Tongtong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the fractions of galactofucan from Lamina japonica have resistance to the human digestive system, partially depending on their sulfate groups. These fractions can significantly modulate the composition of human intestinal microbiota.

Human Fecal Metabolome Reflects Differences in Body Mass Index, Physical Fitness, and Blood Lipoproteins in Healthy Older Adults

Mengni Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between body mass index (BMI), physical fitness, blood plasma lipoprotein levels, and the fecal metabolome in older adults. The results showed that overweight and obese individuals had higher levels of certain fecal metabolites, while those in the high-fitness group displayed slightly different concentrations of fecal metabolites compared to the low-fitness group. The findings suggest that the fecal metabolome provides important insights into human health and should be integrated with other omics data for a better understanding of the role of gut microbiome and diet on human health and metabolism.

Whole and polysaccharide powdered Sporisorium reilianum improves DSS-induced colitis in BALB/c mice by modulating gut microbiota

Ximing Yang et al.

Summary: The study showed that whole powder and polysaccharide from Sporisorium reilianum improved disease and colon tissue structure in mice with DSS-induced colitis. The composition and diversity of gut microbiota were significantly increased, promoting the recovery of intestinal mucosal structure. These findings suggest the potential of S. reilianum as a functional food to prevent colitis through the gut microbiota.

Obesity, metabolic health and omics: Current status and future directions

Magdalena Paczkowska-Abdulsalam et al.

Summary: The obesity epidemic is a growing health concern, with some obese individuals showing favorable metabolic profiles despite their high body mass index. The concept of metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) lacks a universal definition or main mechanism, but the use of multi-omics approaches may provide valuable insights into this phenomenon.
