Photodegradation of acebutolol in natural waters: Important roles of carbonate radical and hydroxyl radical

Zimi Ye et al.

Summary: ACE photodegradation rates were found to be significantly higher in river water compared to pure water, especially in the presence of HCO3-. The presence of both NO3- and DOM also increased the ACE photodegradation rates, with center dot OH and 3DOM* playing a role in the degradation process. However, the addition of DOM to a solution with HCO3- weakened the enhancement effect of HCO3- on ACE photodegradation.

Indirect photodegradation of sulfadiazine in the presence of DOM: Effects of DOM components and main seawater constituents

Ying Bai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of DOM composition on the indirect photolysis of SD, revealing that allochthonous humic-like components played a larger role in SD indirect photolysis. A significant relationship was found between the indirect photodegradation of SD and the decay of DOM fluorescent components, suggesting differences in SD indirect photolysis in various DOM solutions.

Hepatotoxicity in carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to environmental levels of norfloxacin (NOR): Some latest evidences from transcriptomics analysis, biochemical parameters and histopathological changes

Si-Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that environmental concentrations of norfloxacin can induce toxic effects on carp liver, resulting in changes in genes related to lipid metabolism, immune response, and cytochrome P450 metabolism, as well as increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Biochemical indicators showed significant changes in total cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and insulin levels. Moreover, exposure to norfloxacin at environmental concentrations can disrupt glucose and lipid metabolism in carp.

Humic Acid Extracts Leading to the Photochemical Bromination of Phenol in Aqueous Bromide Solutions: Influences of Aromatic Components, Polarity and Photochemical Activity

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different fractions of humic acid on the photochemical bromination of phenol, finding that fractions with higher aromatic and polar contents enhanced the reaction more effectively. This highlights the significance of studying the environmental impacts of DOM on the geochemical cycle of organic halogen through separating and investigating components with different chemical properties.

Indirect photodegradation of sulfathiazole and sulfamerazine: Influence of the CDOM components and seawater factors (salinity, pH, nitrate and bicarbonate)

Xinyu Tang et al.

Summary: The presence of CDOM significantly increased the photodegradation rates of ST and SM in an indirect degradation process, following pseudofirst order kinetics. Analysis of CDOM revealed that exogenous components with high molecular weight and more aromatic groups played a crucial role in the photodegradation of ST and SM. Seawater factors also influenced the process by affecting the steady-state concentrations of reactive intermediates.

pH-dependent oxidation mechanisms over FeCu doped g-C3N4 for ofloxacin degradation via the efficient peroxymonosulfate activation

Yayang Tian et al.

Summary: The bimetallic FeCu-g-C3N4 catalyst showed pH dependency in PMS activation for OFX degradation, with the type of ROS generated correlated to the pH of the reaction system. Fe, Cu, and cyano groups on g-C3N4 played critical roles, with center dot OH and O-1(2) contributing most to OFX degradation under acidic conditions and O-1(2) being the dominant ROS under alkaline conditions.

Dengmiao Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that natural colloidal particles (NCPs) can significantly accelerate the photodegradation rate of ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), indirect photodegradation (IP) accounts for an important proportion in the degradation process, and the triplet states of colloidal organic matter play a key role in photolysis.

Mechanism of bicarbonate enhancing the photodegradation of β-blockers in natural waters

Jieqiong Wang et al.

Summary: The presence of HCO3- significantly increased the photodegradation rates of sotalol (SOT) but had no effects on carvedilol and arotinolol. The formation of carbonate radical (CO3 • -) by direct oxidation of HCO3- played a significant role in SOT photodegradation. Competition kinetics experiments showed that all three β-blockers have high second-order rate constants for the reaction with CO3 • -, but only triplet-excited SOT has a higher reduction potential to oxidize HCO3- and produce CO3 • -.

Direct and indirect photodegradation of atrazine and S-metolachlor in agriculturally impacted surface water and associated C and N isotope fractionation

Guillaume Drouin et al.

Summary: Knowledge of direct and indirect photodegradation of pesticides and associated isotope fractionation can help to assess pesticide degradation in surface waters. In this study, we investigated carbon and nitrogen isotope fractionation during direct and indirect photodegradation of herbicides atrazine and S-metolachlor in agriculturally impacted surface waters. The results showed that DOM slowed down photodegradation while nitrates increased degradation rates. UV light led to significant C and N isotope fractionation, while simulated sunlight resulted in negligible C and slight N isotope fractionation, highlighting the importance of radiation wavelengths on isotope fractionation induced by direct photodegradation.
