Field survey and analysis of water flux and salinity gradients considering the effects of sea ice coverage and rubber dam: a case study of the Liao River Estuary, China

Influence of sluice gate operation on salinity stratification and hypoxia development in a brackish estuary dam

Summary: The artificially made Saemangeum Lake in Korea has poor water quality and suffers from hypoxia. This study reveals that the inflow of seawater is one of the causes of hypoxia through analyzing the spatial and vertical distribution of salinity and dissolved oxygen. Continuous observations of multiple parameters for 40 days indicate that hypoxia mainly occurs at the bottom layer of the survey sites directly affected by seawater. The stable water column and vertical salinity structure contribute to the hypoxia when there is insufficient seawater inflow or non-operation of sluice gate. To improve the water quality, it is necessary to control the alternating currents that obstruct the supplementation of dissolved oxygen from seawater flowing through the sluice gate.

Environmental impact of removal of a large-scale sluice gate on Nakaumi Lagoon and adjacent coastal waters, southwest Japan: Evidence from long-term foraminiferal monitoring

Summary: A study was conducted to examine the impact of sluice gate removal on Nakaumi Lagoon and nearby coastal waters. The results showed that the removal of the sluice gate increased sediment accumulation rate in coastal waters and led to changes in the foraminiferal assemblages. The presence of coastal species in Nakaumi Lagoon increased, while the population of lagoon-adapted species decreased.

Long-term variation in volume transport of the Tsushima warm current estimated from ADCP current measurement and sea level differences in the Korea/Tsushima Strait

Summary: ADCP current data and other datasets were used to analyze the volume transport and seasonal variation of the Tsushima Warm Current. The results showed that the transport and seasonal variation of the current in the Korea/Tsushima Strait, western channel, and eastern channel were similar. Since 1989, the transport of the current has been increasing, especially in spring and summer, and this increase is related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation.

The roles of wind and baroclinic processes in cross-isobath water exchange within the Bohai Sea

Summary: This study investigates the influences of wind and baroclinic processes on water exchanges between nearshore and offshore waters in the Bohai Sea. The results show significant seasonal and spatial variations in these exchanges, with stronger fluxes during summer and weaker fluxes during fall. Wind affects the upper-layer water exchange through advection, while it alters the subsurface layer exchange through enhanced mixing and weakened pressure gradient force. Thermal gradient-driven volume transports are prominent during summer, while salinity-driven transports occur in Laizhou Bay year round.

Impacts of sea ice on marine dynamics in western Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea

Summary: The Bohai Sea experiences wintertime sea ice development and high levels of human economic activity, with sea ice having destructive effects on maritime transportation and ocean engineering. Sea ice coverage suppresses significant wave height (Hs) and residual water level (RWL), as well as sediment resuspension due to reduced wave induced shear stress. Sea ice also influences residual current (RC) velocity, with variations in destruction periods impacting coastal engineering projects. The effects of sea ice on local hydrodynamics and sediments are closely related to wind speed and direction, providing valuable reference values for sea ice formation and disappearance in mid- and high-latitude bays amid global climate change.

Phytoplankton biomass and community composition in three Texas estuaries differing in freshwater inflow regime

Summary: This study compared environmental conditions and phytoplankton biomass/composition in three Texas estuaries with different freshwater inflow regimes to understand the impact of freshwater inflow on phytoplankton communities. The results showed that despite differences in freshwater inflow, salinity, and nutrient regimes, differences in phytoplankton community composition were relatively small, indicating the influence of other factors.

The impacts of near-bed flow characteristics on river bed sediment transport under ice-covered conditions in 2016-2021
