Stock Assessment of Four Dominant Shark Bycatch Species in Bottom Trawl Fisheries in the Northern South China Sea

Youwei Xu et al.

Summary: Sharks play an important role in marine ecosystems by restricting and controlling the behavior and population of other species. This study assessed the stock status of four common shark bycatch species in the northern South China Sea using the length-based Bayesian biomass estimation method. The results can be used for the management of shark fisheries in the region.

Local ecological knowledge to assist conservation status assessments in data poor contexts: a case study with the threatened sharks of the Brazilian Northeast

Antoine O. H. C. Leduc et al.

Summary: The study conducted on shark species caught in Brazilian waters by interviewing fishermen from the Northeast found variations in the maximum length of sharks caught by different age groups and trends of decline in maximum length for some species. Local ecological knowledge provided support for conservation status listing in data-poor contexts by revealing discrepancies between national and global Red List assessments for some species.

Half a century of global decline in oceanic sharks and rays

Nathan Pacoureau et al.

Summary: Overfishing is the primary cause of marine defaunation, with global abundance of oceanic sharks and rays declining by 71% since 1970. Three-quarters of the species in this important assemblage are now at risk of extinction. Urgent measures, such as strict fishing prohibitions and science-based catch limits, are needed to prevent further population collapse and promote species recovery.

Overfishing drives over one-third of all sharks and rays toward a global extinction crisis

Nicholas K. Dulvy et al.

Summary: The IUCN Red List assessment reveals that over one-third of chondrichthyans are threatened with extinction, primarily due to overfishing. Species in tropical and subtropical coastal waters are disproportionately threatened. Urgent measures such as science-based fishing limits, effective marine protected areas, and strategies to reduce fishing mortality are needed to prevent further extinctions and ensure food security and ecosystem functions.

Reconstruction of Marine Commercial Landings for the Brazilian Industrial and Artisanal Fisheries From 1950 to 2015

Katia Meirelles Felizola Freire et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed the national database of marine commercial landings for Brazilian industrial and artisanal fisheries from 1950 to 2015, revealing fluctuations in total landings and the significant contribution of industrial fisheries. Artisanal fisheries have been declining since 2005, but there are still issues with the fishing of threatened species and incomplete statistics.
