Spatio-temporal variability of turbid freshwater plumes in the Inner Sea of Chiloe, northern Patagonia

Raul P. Flores et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the variability of turbid freshwater plumes in northern Patagonia using satellite data for the first time. The analysis shows that the plume variability is related to river discharge and large-scale climatic variability. The study also identifies a threshold value to determine plume occurrence and reveals different modes of plume variability. These findings contribute to a better understanding of hydrographic and ecological processes in the region.

Linking Phytoplankton Variability to Atmospheric Blocking in an Eastern Boundary Upwelling System

Chengfeng Le et al.

Summary: Using a 20-year time-series record, this study identified a strong linkage between phytoplankton variability in the eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS) and a high latitude, large-scale atmospheric process. Blocking events over Greenland caused a weakening of wind-driven upwelling, leading to inhibited phytoplankton growth. These findings underscore the importance of atmospheric connections in coastal upwelling ecosystems.

Meridional Changes in Satellite Chlorophyll and Fluorescence in Optically-Complex Coastal Waters of Northern Patagonia

Sebastian I. Vasquez et al.

Summary: Northern Patagonia houses the largest estuarine system, the Inner Sea of Chiloe, characterized by complex geography. Phytoplankton distribution along the Inner Sea showed a meridional gradient, influenced by topography and seasonal variation of winds. This study highlights the importance of local Chl-a algorithms for accurate satellite data interpretation in the region.

Identifying key driving mechanisms of heat waves in central Chile

Alan Demortier et al.

Summary: This study investigates the main drivers of heat wave events in central Chile using state-of-the-art reanalysis data and observations, revealing that temperature extremes and frequency of heat waves are better captured at inland stations compared to coastal stations. The study also highlights the importance of synoptic- and large-scale features, as well as sub-synoptic processes such as coastal lows, in shaping the characteristics of heat wave events.

Intraseasonal teleconnections leading to heat waves in central Chile

Martin Jacques-Coper et al.

Summary: This study focuses on precursors of summer warm events in central Chile, indicating higher probabilities of occurrence with respect to expected climatological values. The relationship between the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and an extra-tropical index (ETI) in contributing to the organization of large-scale circulation anomalies leading ultimately to heat waves in CCh is explored. These signals can be monitored at least 2 weeks in advance, providing valuable insights for predicting and preparing for such extreme weather events.

Scientific warnings could help to reduce farmed salmon mortality due to harmful algal blooms

Doris Soto et al.

Summary: The increasing occurrences of harmful algal blooms affecting mariculture in southern Chile are related to both climatic factors and increasing eutrophication of coastal zones. The role of climate change in these blooms is becoming more relevant, but efforts to separate its impact from other causal factors are inconclusive. Government and farmers have not paid enough attention to scientific information and advice, leading to recent salmon mortality due to harmful algal blooms. Policy recommendations are provided to address this issue.

Recent Changes in the Low-Level Jet along the Subtropical West Coast of South America

Catalina Aguirre et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown significant changes in the number and duration of coastal low-level jet (CLLJ) events off central Chile, with an increase in CLLJ events in the whole study area during winter and a decrease observed at lower latitudes during summer. The changes are attributed to alterations in central pressures and the frequency of extratropical, migratory anticyclones reaching the coast of South America.

Blooms of Alexandrium catenella in Coastal Waters of Chilean Patagonia: Is Subantarctic Surface Water Involved?

David W. Crawford et al.

Summary: Evidences of shellfish toxicity have been recorded in South America since the late 16th Century. Toxic blooms of dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella were first described in western Magellan Strait in the early 1970s and have since spread northward to Chilean Patagonia, culminating in a catastrophic event around Chiloé Island in 2016. Human activities may play a role in intensifying these blooms in more densely populated areas of northern Patagonia, while coastal areas with sparse human population density are less likely influenced

Summary: This review evaluates the impact of harmful algae on marine shellfish, focusing on the responses of molluscan species to harmful algal blooms and phycotoxins. The study categorizes molluscan responses into effects on grazing and behavior, metabolic and physiological reactions, and fitness consequences. Results show a positive correlation between molluscan production and the number of available studies, with bivalves often accumulating more toxins and posing risks to human health.

Broad-Scale Surface and Atmospheric Conditions during Large Fires in South-Central Chile

David B. McWethy et al.

Summary: The study found that active fire months in south-central Chile are correlated with warm surface temperatures, dry conditions, and the presence of circumpolar high-pressure systems. Additionally, warm surface temperatures in active fire months are linked to weakened cool westerly winds and increased warm easterly winds from the Andean Cordillera. These conditions, compounded by episodic warm winds and easterly wind anomalies, will continue to create a conducive environment for large fires in south-central Chile.
