First assessment of anthropogenic impacts in submarine canyon systems off southwestern Australia

Marco Taviani et al.

Summary: By quantifying macro-litter discovered during Remotely Operated Vehicle surveys, we evaluated the anthropogenic impacts on southwestern Australian submarine canyons. The Bremer canyon systems show minimal impacts, while the Perth Canyon has relatively more macro-litter due to intense maritime traffic and nearby urban development. However, the environmental status of southwestern Australian canyons is relatively pristine on a global scale, providing a baseline for monitoring and preserving these habitats with lush and diverse biota, including deep-sea corals.

3D-Representations for studying deep-sea coral habitats in the Lacaze-Duthiers Canyon, from geological settings to individual specimens

Marie-Claire Fabri et al.

Summary: In the CALADU cruise of 2019, three types of 3D reconstructions were used to study the cold water coral colonies in the Lacaze-Duthiers Canyon. By mapping the canyon's flanks and building digital terrain models, the distribution and habitat of coral colonies were examined in three dimensions. The study also calculated the density and vertical distribution of the colonies and discovered new areas with abundant coral colonies. Additionally, micro-CT scans were used to analyze the intrinsic skeleton organization of different coral species.

Marine litter in submarine canyons: A systematic review and critical synthesis

Ivan Hernandez et al.

Summary: The presence and impact of marine litter in submarine canyons is still poorly understood and there are significant gaps in knowledge, particularly regarding the impact of macroplastics in deep-sea environments. There is a lack of standardization in study methodologies, including sampling techniques and classification protocols, which hinders the comparison and analysis of research findings. Furthermore, there is a need for more comprehensive reporting on the interactions between litter and the surrounding environment and biota. Overall, this study highlights the urgent need for standardized methodologies to fully understand and address the impact of marine litter in submarine canyons.

Plastic pollution in the Arctic

Melanie Bergmann et al.

Summary: Plastic debris and microplastics are widespread in the Arctic, even in areas without human activity. They come from various sources, both local and distant, and are transported to the Arctic by ocean currents, atmospheric transport, and rivers. Once in the Arctic, plastic pollution accumulates and affects local ecosystems.

Transport and accumulation of plastic litter in submarine canyons? The role of gravity flows

Guangfa Zhong et al.

Summary: The study found focused accumulations of plastic litter in a submarine canyon of the South China Sea, concentrated mainly in two large scours in the steeper middle reach of the canyon. The distribution of litter accumulations is linked to turbidity currents, indicating that litter dispersion in the deep sea may be governed by gravity flows initially.

Summary: Studies show that bottom trawling in submarine canyons can lead to increased sedimentation rates and silt contents, primarily due to the expansion of more powerful trawlers to deeper fishing grounds.

Scientific, societal and pedagogical approaches to tackle the impact of climate change on marine pollution

Tiago M. Alves et al.

Summary: This study uses Digital Elevation Models, hydrographic, and climatic data along with computer simulations to investigate the impact of climate change on marine pollution. The results show that different climate change signals could potentially alter pollution flow and concentration in European Seas. The main sources of marine pollution are identified as rivers near cities, coastal areas under demographic pressure, shipping lanes releasing oil, and rugged seafloor where industrial fishing occurs.

Distribution of seafloor litter and its interaction with benthic organisms in deep waters of the Ligurian Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean)

Michela Angiolillo et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean Sea is highly polluted and serves as a hotspot for marine litter. Research in the Ligurian Sea revealed high accumulation of litter in underwater canyons and seamounts, impacting benthic communities and deep-sea species. Urgent measures are needed to manage deep-sea pollution and reduce litter input in marine environments.

Environmental status of marine plastic pollution in Spain

M. A. Martin-Lara et al.

Summary: This critical review examines the environmental status of marine plastic pollution in Spain, particularly focusing on microplastic pollution. The study reveals that plastic waste accumulation is significant in Spanish waters, with high concentrations in areas like the Alboran Sea, the Gulf of Alicante, and the vicinity of Barcelona. Moreover, microplastic contamination is severe on Spanish beaches, especially in the Canary Islands region.

The quest for seafloor macrolitter: a critical review of background knowledge, current methods and future prospects

Miquel Canals et al.

Summary: The seafloor, covering 70% of the Earth's surface, is a major sink for marine litter. However, due to its location in the deep sea, it is the least investigated fraction of marine litter. Monitoring frameworks are still being established to address the estimation of seafloor macrolitter.
