Editorial: Emerging challenges and solutions for plastic pollution

Outside the Safe Operating Space of the Planetary Boundary for Novel Entities

Summary: This article suggests that the safe operating space of the planetary boundary for novel entities is exceeded due to the increasing production and releases exceeding the global capacity for assessment and monitoring. Plastic pollution is highlighted as a major concern. The article presents an impact pathway from the production of novel entities to their impacts on Earth system processes and proposes several criteria for control variables. Urgent action is recommended to reduce the harm associated with exceeding the boundary by reducing the production and releases of novel entities.

A comparative investigation of toxicity of three polymer nanoparticles on acorn barnacle (Amphibalanus amphitrite)

Summary: In this study, the toxicity of polymer nanoparticles, including PMMA, PS, and PVC, on Acorn Barnacle nauplii was investigated. PVC nanoparticles showed significant toxicity, while PMMA and PS nanoparticles did not have adverse effects on the nauplii. Chemical analysis of the polymer powders used to prepare the nanoparticles revealed the presence of low molecular weight oligomers, which may play a role in the observed toxicity.

Transfer of Poly(methyl methacrylate) Nanoparticles from Parents to Offspring and the Protection Mechanism in Two Marine Invertebrates

Summary: In this study, it was found that ingested nano- and microplastic particles do not necessarily transfer from exposed adults to offspring in all animal species. The results suggest that protective mechanisms preventing transfer of nanoparticles from parents to offspring could differ among animal species and that the choice of the animal model and polymer nanoparticle size selected can significantly impact the outcome of the study.

Rapid Characterization of Macroplastic Input and Leakage in the Ganges River Basin

Summary: Efforts to understand macroplastic pollution have predominantly focused on coastal and marine environments, neglecting freshwater, terrestrial, and urban ecosystems. This study investigates the sources of macroplastics in the environment by examining plastic input and leakage. The researchers surveyed litter aggregation pathways in the Ganges River Basin and assessed single-use plastic consumer products. The findings reveal that areas with lower populations have a higher number of littered items per 1,000 people, with plastics and tobacco products being the most commonly recorded items. While most single-use plastic consumer products are manufactured in-country, a significant percentage of brands are owned by international companies.

A rapid review and meta-regression analyses of the toxicological impacts of microplastic exposure in human cells

Summary: This review investigates the thresholds of microplastics (MPs) effects on human cells by synthesizing existing evidence. The study identifies several biological endpoints, such as cytotoxicity, immune response, oxidative stress, and barrier attributes, that are affected by MPs. The sensitivity of cells to MPs varies, with Caco-2 cells being the most susceptible. Additionally, the shape, duration of exposure, and concentration of MPs play a role in determining their effects on cells.
