The oceanographic isolation of the Ogasawara Islands and genetic divergence in a reef-building coral

Patricia H. Wepfer et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the degree of oceanographic isolation of the Ogasawara Islands based on genetic data and a biophysical dispersal model. The results show that the coral population in Ogasawara is highly genetically differentiated from neighboring reefs and has diverged from the Ryukyu Islands primarily through eastward migration. These findings highlight the importance of the Ogasawara Archipelago for marine and terrestrial conservation.

Synchrotron μ-XRF mapping analysis of trace elements in in-situ cultured Japanese red coral, Corallium japonicum

Summary: This study estimated the growth rate of Japanese red coral through in-situ culture and analyzed the uptake process of trace elements. The results showed that water temperature had an impact on the growth rings and the distribution of trace elements in the coral axis.

Genome-Wide SNP Data Revealed Notable Spatial Genetic Structure in the Deep-Sea Precious Coral Corallium japonicum

Kenji Takata et al.

Summary: Estimating the spatial extent of gamete and larval dispersal of deep-sea coral species is challenging but crucial for their conservation. The study examined the spatial genetic structure of Corallium japonicum off the coast of Kochi, finding that over 700 neutral SNPs were needed to detect significant spatial genetic structure and suggesting the local extinction of the species within an approximately 11 km diameter should be avoided through over-harvesting prevention measures.
