The perspective of fish venom: An overview of the physiology, evolution, molecular and genetics

Convergent evolution of venom gland transcriptomes across Metazoa

Summary: Animals have evolved specialized organs and anatomical structures to produce and release potent bioactive molecules, known as venoms, for the purpose of subduing prey or predators. A comparative analysis of venom gland transcriptomes from 20 venomous species reveals a strong convergence in gene expression profiles, indicating that different animals have independently adopted similar molecular mechanisms to perform the same function. The study also highlights the presence of stress response mechanisms in venom glands to cope with toxin production, as well as regulatory networks for epithelial development and maintenance.

Molecular Characterization and Functional Analysis of the Nattectin-like Toxin from the Venomous Fish Thalassophryne maculosa

Summary: In this study, a toxin called TmC4-47.2 was identified from the venom of Thalassophryne maculosa, a venomous fish commonly found in Latin America. TmC4-47.2 showed hemagglutinating and microbicide abilities and was found to increase leukocyte rolling and adherence in post-capillary venules dependent on the alpha 5 beta 1 integrin. Additionally, it was observed to induce inflammation through the production of IL-6 and eotaxin, leading to sustained recruitment of eosinophils and neutrophils. Overall, this study characterized the role of TmC4-47.2 as a carbohydrate-independent agglutination response molecule and modulator of eosinophilic and neutrophilic inflammation.

Fish Cytolysins in All Their Complexity

They are large proteins composed of alpha and beta subunits, with high similarity between different fish species.
