Enrichment mechanism of trace elements in pyrite under methane seepage

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of trace elements during the formation of authigenic pyrite, and identifies the potential of the Mo/Cd ratio as a new indicator for methane seepage research.

Tracing the paleo-methane seepage activity over the past 20,000 years in the sediments of Qiongdongnan Basin, northwestern South China Sea

Xiaoming Miao et al.

Summary: This study established an alternative index system for identifying paleo-methane seepage and successfully identified three methane release events. The occurrence of methane seepage led to the formation of authigenic carbonate minerals and pyrite, as well as changes in the redox environment and enrichment of certain elements.

Using multi-proxy approach to constrain temporal variations of methane flux in methane-rich sediments of the southern South China Sea

Junxi Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the geochemical composition of porewaters and sediments in methane-rich sediments in the southern South China Sea, revealing a zone that records sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane, indicating the fixation of the SMTZ at a certain depth for approximately 13,000 years. The stagnant SMTZ is likely attributed to a large decline in sedimentation rate during the transition of the last glacial/interglacial period. Additionally, non-steady-state modelling shows that an enhancement in upward methane flux has persisted for at least 550 years.

Effects of methane seepage activity on the morphology and geochemistry of authigenic pyrite

Xiaoming Miao et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the morphology and geochemical characteristics of authigenic pyrite under methane seepage conditions, finding higher pyrite content and sulfur isotope values in the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ). This suggests major changes in methane flux at site Q6, with anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) occurring for extended periods in paleo-SMTZ layers. These geochemical anomalies indicate that changes in methane flux to the SMTZ are mainly due to dissociation of subsurface methane hydrates.

Architecture and depositional processes of sublacustrine fan systems in structurally active settings: An example from Weixinan Depression, northern South China Sea

Entao Liu et al.

Summary: Sublacustrine fans in structurally active settings often have complex depositional characteristics and pose challenges to hydrocarbon exploration. This study investigated a large-scale sublacustrine fan system in the Eocene Weixinan Depression of the northern South China Sea, identifying two sections with different sedimentary characteristics and sediment supply directions. The lower section was sourced from a western delta with well-sorted sediments transported over long distances, while the upper section was supplied by a northern fan delta with short-distance transported coarse-grained sediments.

Frequency of deep-sea turbidity as an important component of the response of a source-to-sink system to climate: A case study in the eastern middle Bengal Fan since 32 ka

Jingrui Li et al.

Summary: This study identified turbidite records in the Bengal Fan based on lithology, geochemical and mineralogical parameters, showing consistent provenance with hemipelagic layers and a continuous deposition mechanism. The long-term evolution of turbidite deposition in the eastern middle Bengal Fan and four identified stages were found to be part of a comprehensive system response to global and regional changes. The role of the Indian summer monsoon and sea level fluctuations in regulating the deposition center and turbidity activity was also highlighted in the study.

Enhanced sulfidization in a sedimentary turbidite layer from the Nansha Trough in the southern South China Sea

Pengfei Di et al.

Summary: Microbial sulfate reduction in turbidites of the South China Sea is influenced by terrestrial organic matter, leading to enhanced sulfidization due to high rates of sulfate reduction. This study emphasizes the importance of turbidite sedimentation in the sulfur, carbon, and iron biogeochemical cycling.
