The effect of habitat and fishing-effort data resolution on the outcome of seabed status assessment in bottom trawl fisheries

Jan Geert Hiddink et al.

Summary: Mobile bottom fishing has a widespread and known impact on seabed habitats. Risk assessments can evaluate these impacts and inform decisions about sustainable fisheries certification. The resolution of input data layers, particularly for seabed habitats and fishing effort, affects the outcome of risk assessments of bottom trawling impacts. Fine and medium resolution habitat maps provide more detailed information and result in a larger range of seabed status, recovery times, and predicted habitat outcomes than coarse resolution maps.

Identifying priority areas for improvement in Chilean fisheries

Renato Gozzer-Wuest et al.

Summary: Based on a survey conducted in 2019-2020, addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, developing a priority national research agenda to improve fisheries management in Chile, addressing the lack of legitimacy of the fisheries law, developing a new national fisheries policy, and updating the Artisanal Fisheries Registry were identified as priority topics for fisheries policy reform in Chile.

Wild-caught fish populations targeted by MSC-certified fisheries have higher relative abundance than non-MSC populations

Michael C. Melnychuk et al.

Summary: Requirements for a fishery to achieve MSC certification include demonstrating sustainable fishing levels for targeted populations. Comparisons between MSC stocks and non-MSC stocks show that MSC stocks are more likely to have high abundance relative to sustainability benchmarks and are less frequently overfished. However, there are rare exceptions to this pattern due to retrospective changes in scientific advice.

Social and Economic Outcomes of Fisheries Certification: Characterizing Pathways of Change in Canned Fish Markets

Christopher M. Anderson et al.

Summary: The MSC's eco-labeling program aims to showcase fisheries' sustainability and incentivize producers to improve practices by providing information for markets to select sustainable products. However, the underlying mechanisms linking market behavior and participation in the program in different contexts have not been systematically identified.

Balancing ecology, economy and culture in fisheries policy: Participatory research in the Western Mediterranean demersal fisheries management plan

Silvia Gomez et al.

Summary: Fishing communities in the Mediterranean Sea are facing challenges in dealing with ecosystem-based management measures aimed at reducing fishing effort. Stakeholders have mixed reactions to the Western Mediterranean Multi-Annual Demersal Fisheries Plan (WM MAP), with fishers disagreeing with the new regulations while scientists tend to support it. However, all stakeholders agree that balancing cultural heritage values and exploring alternative marketing systems can improve the economic and social viability of fisheries. This highlights the need for a more integrated approach that considers the cultural roots of fishing activity.

A Perspective on the Role of Eco-Certification in Eliminating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

Catherine S. Longo et al.

Summary: Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities pose a threat to marine biodiversity, livelihoods, food security, and human rights globally. Eco-certification can incentivize fishers to adopt best practices, increase transparency, and mitigate ecosystem impacts through private-public cooperation and cross-jurisdiction collaboration.

Alternative seafood marketing systems foster transformative processes in Mediterranean fisheries

Silvia Gomez et al.

Summary: Local fisheries often struggle with limited influence on pricing dynamics due to low production capacity and competition with aquaculture or imported seafood. To address this, new marketing and labeling initiatives have emerged, aiming to add value to catches and improve sale prices. Through fieldwork, the study highlights the challenges faced by fisheries in adapting to demand and navigating conflicts of interest between different sectors.
