Large fluxes of continental-shelf-borne dissolved organic carbon in the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea

Heejun Han et al.

Summary: The study found significant additional supplies of DOC in the central Yellow Sea, originating from newly produced DOC and the degradation of organic matter. The flux of this additional DOC produced in the East China Sea continental shelf is comparable to that from the Changjiang discharge, indicating its potential global importance in marine DOC budgets.

Atmospheric Particles Are Major Sources of Aged Anthropogenic Organic Carbon in Marginal Seas

Peng Ren et al.

Summary: Deposition of atmospheric particulates plays a significant role in transporting materials from land to the ocean, impacting climate and nutrient cycling. This study reveals that old organic carbon (OC) in aerosols contributes significantly to marginal sea sediments, serving as a crucial sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Widespread distribution of allochthonous fluorescent dissolved organic matter in the intermediate water of the North Pacific

Youhei Yamashita et al.

Summary: The study highlights the Sea of Okhotsk as the major source region of allochthonous FDOM in the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), rather than the Bering Sea. Allochthonous FDOM derived from shelf sediments in the Sea of Okhotsk is conservatively distributed throughout the North Pacific via the circulation of intermediate water, especially the upper part of NPIW. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that FDOM can aid in determining the spatiotemporal distribution of NPIW and its mixing with other water masses in the deep ocean.

Variability of the nutrient stream near Kuroshio's origin

Chen-Tung Arthur Chen et al.

Summary: The Kuroshio, also known as the Black Stream, is the most significant current in the Pacific Ocean. It forms a nutrient stream below the euphotic layer, supporting high productivity and fisheries in the East China Sea continental shelf and the Kuroshio Extension. Nutrient transports northward have been increasing since 2015 due to a rise in subsurface water transport, enhancing the Kuroshio's productivity.
