Sensitivity assessment to azamethiphos by time-to-response bioassay and biomarkers in the sea louse Caligus rogercresseyi

Constanza Saez-Vera et al.

Summary: This study assessed the sensitivity of sea lice to delousing drug azamethiphos using the time-to-response method coupled with gene biomarkers. Results showed lower ET50 indexes in susceptible sea lice populations and identified three potential biomarker genes related to drug sensitivity. The study offers novel insights for evaluating delousing drug sensitivity in Chilean salmonid farms through ET50-PCR bioassay.

Perspectives on gene copy number variation and pesticide resistance

David G. Heckel

Summary: Gene duplication has long been known to generate evolutionary diversity, but its implications for pesticide resistance are just beginning to be understood. Transposable elements may facilitate this process, but the mechanistic details remain obscure and unpredictable. New developments in DNA sequencing technology and genome assembly offer promise for revealing more examples, but caution is needed in interpreting the results and validation through independent means is crucial.

Comprehensive characterization of copy number variation (CNV) called from array, long- and short-read data

Ksenia Lavrichenko et al.

Summary: Different high-throughput genome technologies have varying abilities in detecting copy number variants (CNVs), with long-read platforms being able to detect CNVs in genomic regions inaccessible to arrays or short reads. The reproducibility of CNV detection within each technology is strongly linked to other CNV evidence measures. Additionally, the public database frequency profiles for CNVs vary depending on the technology the database was built on.

Comprehensive Transcriptome Analyses in Sea Louse Reveal Novel Delousing Drug Responses Through MicroRNA regulation

Gustavo Nunez-Acuna et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the role of miRNAs in gene regulation related to drug metabolism and detoxification in terrestrial species. However, research on marine ectoparasites, especially in investigating molecular mechanisms of pesticide resistance, is limited. This study explored the miRNome responses of the sea louse Caligus rogercresseyi to delousing drugs and identified potential gene regulation mechanisms involving miRNAs and long non-coding RNAs, shedding light on novel pharmacological mechanisms associated with drug resistance in sea lice species.

Long-Read Sequencing Improves the Detection of Structural Variations Impacting Complex Non-Coding Elements of the Genome

Ghausia Begum et al.

Summary: The emergence of long-read sequencing technology provides a new method for detecting genomic structural variations in rare genetic diseases, particularly in conditions like autism spectrum disorders where pathogenic variants may be found in non-coding regions. Long-read sequencing detected a significantly higher number of SVs compared to short-read sequencing, particularly impacting genes within the 1-100kb size range.

Trypsin Genes Are Regulated through the miRNA Bantam and Associated with Drug Sensitivity in the Sea Louse Caligus rogercresseyi

Gustavo Nunez-Acuna et al.

Summary: The study identified molecular interactions between trypsin genes and bantam miRNAs in the sea louse C. rogercresseyi in response to delousing drugs. Gene expression analyses revealed that trypsin genes and bantam miRNAs showed opposite trends in response to drug exposure. Luciferase assays indicated that the trypsin 2-like gene may be a potential target for bantam miRNAs, suggesting a role in the pharmacological sensitivity of sea lice.
