Summary: This study provides detailed biological characterization of the previously unexplored benthos in central California, USA seafloor, showing the influence of various factors such as topography and habitat characteristics on marine communities, with oxygen concentration not being the main predictor of species richness and density.

Detrital signals of coastal erosion and fluvial sediment supply during glacio-eustatic sea-level rise, Southern California, USA

G. R. Sharman et al.

Summary: Using detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology as a provenance tracer, the study estimated relative sediment contributions from rivers and coastal erosion in the Southern California Borderland from late Pleistocene to present. It was found that during the late Pleistocene sea-level rise, coastal erosion dominantly supplied detrital zircon, while rivers were the main source during periods of sea-level stability. The relative sediment supply from coastal erosion was found to be strongly dependent on climate state, supporting predictions of enhanced coastal erosion during future sea-level rise.
