A solution for restoration of critical wetlands and waterbird habitats in coastal deltaic systems

Lin Yuan et al.

Summary: Loss of coastal wetland habitats has been directly linked to a decline in waterbird populations, leading to calls to reverse this trend by restoring these habitats, which have been hindered by sediment scarcity. This study in the Yangtze River Delta proposes feasible solutions to solve the sediment shortage in habitat restoration, with three different approaches adopted for rehabilitation sites to promote sediment deposition and settle-ment and using dredged sediments to create new habitats. The comparison and assessment results show that proper coastal silting structures and ecological utilization of nearby dredged sediments are effective solutions to restore coastal habitats and increase waterbird diversity and abundance.

Biocapacity and cost-effectiveness benefits of increased peatland restoration in Scotland

Nicola Horsburgh et al.

Summary: This study provides the first assessment of Scotland's biocapacity and includes peatlands as a new land type. The findings show that despite covering only 25% of the land area, peatlands contribute only 2% to Scotland's biocapacity, while degraded peatlands increase the ecological deficit by 40%. The study also estimates the cost-effectiveness of peatland restoration and suggests that highly cost-effective methods can be applied to larger areas than the current government targets.

Effects of Sea Level Rise on Land Use and Ecosystem Services in the Liaohe Delta

Liehui Zhi et al.

Summary: Sea level rise has a significant impact on ecosystem services in coastal wetlands, causing changes in wetland patterns, reduction in carbon storage, stability in habitat quality, and decrease in nitrogen and phosphorus loads. Understanding the effects of sea level rise on ecosystem services is of great importance for the development, construction, conservation, and restoration of coastal wetlands.

Effects of Land Use/Land Cover Changes on Carbon Storage in North African Coastal Wetlands

Rajaa Aitali et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of land use/land cover changes on carbon stocks in North African coastal wetlands and found that only two sites showed an increase in stored carbon, while the other four sites exhibited a loss of carbon. Urban expansion and land use conversion were identified as the main drivers of these changes in carbon dynamics.

Impact of Land-Use Changes on Soil Properties and Carbon Pools in India: A Meta-analysis

Rajeev Padbhushan et al.

Summary: This study found that land-use changes have significant impacts on soil carbon and microbial biomass. Grasslands, plantation lands, and cultivated lands experienced the greatest loss of soil organic carbon compared to native forest lands. Microbial biomass was lower in other land uses compared to forests. All land uses had higher carbon dioxide equivalent emissions than forest land. Conversion of forest land to cultivated land resulted in losses of total carbon, labile carbon, non-labile carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and soil organic carbon stocks. Changes in soil carbon pools and properties were more pronounced in surface soils. The restoration of carbon stocks varied among different land uses.

Degradation and Ecological Restoration of Estuarine Wetlands in China

Shanze Li et al.

Summary: China's estuarine wetlands are vital for carbon storage, biodiversity maintenance, and shoreline protection, as well as providing recreational value. However, over half of them have been lost due to natural or anthropogenic factors, posing challenges for their protection, restoration, and management. With a coastline of 18,436 km, China's wetlands support a significant portion of its population, numerous cities, and a multitude of species. China has undertaken over 1000 coastal restoration projects to mitigate loss, and future efforts will focus on biological combined restoration technology.

Response of soil carbon fractions and enzyme activities to mowing management on in a coastal wetland of the yellow river delta

Qian Cui et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands are important carbon sinks, and mowing management induced by human activities can significantly impact soil carbon stocks in these wetlands. This study investigated the effects of mowing management on soil quality, organic carbon content, and enzyme activities in Phragmites australis wetlands of the Yellow River Delta. The results showed that mowing treatments increased soil nutrient content and improved soil quality. Mowing also increased the amount of organic carbon and stimulated enzyme activities in the topsoil. Overall, continuous mowing management can enhance soil quality and carbon storage capacity of P. australis wetlands, thus contributing to carbon sequestration and sink capacity in coastal wetlands.

Global blue carbon accumulation in tidal wetlands increases with climate change

Faming Wang et al.

Summary: Coastal tidal wetlands play a significant role in accumulating organic carbon which can help mitigate climate change. The study shows that globally, tidal wetlands accumulate 53.65 Tg C annually, with factors such as sea level rise, temperature and precipitation affecting the trends. Certain countries are more vulnerable to tidal wetland carbon losses under climate change, while others will experience a significant increase in carbon accumulation.

Success of coastal wetlands restoration is driven by sediment availability

Zezheng Liu et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands restored by Nature-based Solutions can trap more sediments than natural ones, and their efficiency is mainly determined by sediment supply, according to a meta-analysis of studies globally. The effectiveness of these restoration projects is primarily driven by sediment availability, not by wetland elevation, tidal range, local rates of sea-level rise, and significant wave height. Nature-based Solutions can mitigate coastal wetland vulnerability to sea-level rise, but are effective only in coastal locations where abundant sediment supply is available.
