Adherence of kelp (Saccharina latissima) gametophytes on ropes with different binder treatments and flow regimes

Wouter Visch et al.

Summary: This study examined the effect of different binder types and application treatments on the adhesion of kelp propagules to cultivation ropes, and evaluated their effectiveness by comparing adhesion densities under different flow velocities. The results showed that the effectiveness of binder-assisted seeding of kelp propagules was not affected by flow velocities and was comparable to the non-binder treatment.

Global kelp forest restoration: past lessons, present status, and future directions

Aaron M. Eger et al.

Summary: Kelp forest ecosystems and their associated ecosystem services are declining worldwide, prompting marine managers to work on restoration efforts. Restoration of kelp forests started in Japan in the 18th century and has since spread globally with varying methodologies. Projects located near existing kelp forests have shown higher success rates, while high costs for restoration remain a common challenge.

Summary: Kelp ecosystems provide habitat to important species, but their decline is variable. This study examined the abiotic factors affecting the distribution of two dominant kelp species in Canada. Light, turbidity, and sedimentation were found to be the main factors limiting kelp distribution.

Harvest Time Can Affect the Optimal Yield and Quality of Sea Lettuce (Ulva fenestrata) in a Sustainable Sea-Based Cultivation

Sophie Steinhagen et al.

Summary: Seaweed biomass is a renewable resource that has multiple applications. This study focused on identifying the optimal harvest time of sea-based cultivated sea lettuce (Ulva fenestrata) in Sweden. The results showed that late spring (May) had the highest biomass yields, while early spring (April) was optimal for producing biomass with high fatty acid, protein, biochar, phenolic, and pigment contents. The study emphasized the importance of carefully selecting harvest time to balance yield, quality, and desired biochemical contents for future sea-based algal cultivations.

Valuing the ecosystem service benefits from kelp forest restoration: A choice experiment from Norway

Stephen Hynes et al.

Summary: Habitat loss and degradation are major causes of species decline and extinction in marine ecosystems. Restoring Norwegian kelp forests has been shown to have positive societal welfare impacts, with enhanced biodiversity being highly valued by the public and restoration area size being prioritized by active marine environment users. Failure to incorporate these non-market values into marine policy decisions may not be in the best interest of society.

Summary: Research has shown that sugar kelp can be successfully cultivated in Northern European waters using a direct seeding method. However, experiments conducted at different cultivation sites and times revealed that while the direct seeding method yielded comparable levels at exposed sites, improvements may be needed for sheltered locations.

Summary: In order to industrialize macroalgal cultivation in Norway, new automated methods and solutions are needed to increase production. Standardization of equipment and automation can help to upscale production to meet the growing global demands. Although marine cultivation is an important economic industry in Norway, the potential of seaweed cultivation has not been fully realized.

Modulation of physiological performance by temperature and salinity in the sugar kelp Saccharina latissima

Catia Monteiro et al.

Summary: The sugar kelp Saccharina latissima is influenced by temperature and salinity changes. Low temperatures significantly affect the species, leading to increased mannitol content and decreased growth, while low salinity results in decreased mannitol content and growth.
