Associations between intimate partner violence and adverse birth outcomes during pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The association between intimate partner violence and low birth weight and preterm delivery in eastern Ethiopia: Findings from a facility-based study

Summary: The study found that 39% of women in public hospitals in the Harari region reported experiencing partner violence during their most recent pregnancy. The prevalence of preterm birth and low birth weight were 18.9% and 12.01% respectively. After adjusting for potential confounders, women who experienced any intimate partner violence during pregnancy were 1.62 times more likely to give birth prematurely and 1.37 times more likely to have a low birth weight infant compared to women who did not experience intimate partner violence during pregnancy.

Association between intimate partner violence during pregnancy and risk of preterm birth

Summary: This study found that women exposed to intimate partner violence during pregnancy were at higher risk of preterm birth, especially in urban areas. Risk factors associated with IPV included urban residence, low economic status, and unemployment. Effective policies and programs are needed to address the issue of IPV in Zimbabwe.

Summary: The study indicates that violence against pregnant women in Minia Governorate, Egypt is common, especially emotional violence, and has adverse effects on women and their pregnancy outcomes. Various forms of violence, such as emotional, physical, sexual, and verbal abuse, are prevalent, leading to complications during pregnancy like vaginal infection, vaginal bleeding, preterm labor, and premature rupture of membrane. The fear of the husband is identified as a significant risk factor, perpetuating a cycle of violence.

Adverse perinatal outcomes of intimate partner violence during pregnancy

Summary: The study aimed to determine the adverse perinatal outcomes of intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy in Kurdistan, Iran. It found a statistically significant association between IPV exposure during pregnancy and perinatal mortality, pre-term birth, intra uterine growth restriction, premature rupture of membranes, placental abruption and low birth weight. Strategies such as training health system staff to identify female victims of violence, counseling, treatment and referral to specialized centers are suggested to address this issue.

Summary: Domestic Violence [DV] is a global health issue with psychological, physical or sexual violence occurring in the home. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of DV in pregnant women and its association with maternal and perinatal outcomes. Results showed a high prevalence of DV during pregnancy, with significant associations with adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes, highlighting the need for intervention and support for affected women.
