Active Distribution Grids Providing Voltage Support: The Swiss Case

Stavros Karagiannopoulos et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a centralized tractable control scheme based on OPF that optimizes the real-time operation of active distribution networks, while also considering voltage support as an ancillary service to the transmission network. By embedding Switzerland's current voltage support requirements as constraints and investigating the potential benefits of ancillary services provision under different operational modes of DER inverters, the performance of the proposed scheme is demonstrated using a combined HV-MV-LV test system.

Provision of Voltage Ancillary Services Through Enhanced TSO-DSO Interaction and Aggregated Distributed Energy Resources

Anastasios Oulis Rousis et al.

Summary: With the continuous growth of electrical energy generated from renewable energy resources, a shift towards provision of reactive power from synchronous and non-synchronous generation is observed, enhancing the flexibility in operating the network. The proposed technology-neutral voltage ancillary services strategy focuses on voltage stability and aims to mitigate investments in reactive compensating equipment by utilizing a combination of distributed generation and traditional resources. Dynamic and transient studies validate the technical benefits of the strategy, with practical feasibility confirmed through hardware-in-the-loop testing.
