Polyphenols in Ruminant Nutrition and Their Effects on Reproduction

Drago Beslo et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the knowledge regarding the potential positive and negative effects of polyphenols in the diets of domestic animals and their bioavailability. Polyphenols have antioxidant properties and can improve the quality of animal gametes, positively affecting reproduction. However, the intake of phytoestrogens that mimic estrogen function may induce pathological conditions in the female reproductive tract.

Condensed Tannins as Antioxidants in Ruminants-Effectiveness and Action Mechanisms to Improve Animal Antioxidant Status and Oxidative Stability of Products

David Soldado et al.

Summary: Condensed tannins (CTs) are secondary plant metabolites known for their antinutritional properties but also for their beneficial attributes for animal health and food quality, including antioxidant activity. Utilization of CT-rich sources in ruminant feeding can improve the animals' antioxidant status and oxidative stability of their products. However, the mechanism underlying the antioxidant activity of CT sources in ruminants is still not fully understood.

EFFECTS OF CHESTNUT TANNINS SUPPLEMENTATION OF PREPARTUM MODERATE YIELDING DAIRY COWS ON METABOLIC HEALTH, ANTIOXIDANT AND COLOSTRUM INDICES

Radisa Prodanovic et al.

Summary: This study found that dietary supplementation with chestnut tannins can improve the metabolic and antioxidant status, as well as colostrum quality of prepartum cows. It led to lower BUN, higher serum glucose and insulin concentrations, as well as improved antioxidant capacity. Additionally, supplementation with chestnut tannins tended to improve colostrum quality without adverse effects on metabolic profiles prepartum.
