25 years of surveillance of drug-resistant tuberculosis: achievements, challenges, and way forward

Summary: Tuberculosis is the second leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, with drug-resistant tuberculosis remaining a public health crisis. The Global Project on Anti-Tuberculosis Drug Resistance Surveillance, hosted by the WHO, has been an important platform for evaluating drug resistance trends in tuberculosis. However, surveillance systems for bacterial pathogens are still in the early stages of implementation in many countries.
