Prioritization of pig farm biosecurity for control of Salmonella and hepatitis E virus infections: results of a European expert opinion elicitation

Erika Galipo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of biosecurity measures in controlling Salmonella spp. and hepatitis E virus (HEV) on pig farms by collecting opinions from experts. The experts ranked pig mixing, cleaning and disinfection, feed, water and bedding, and purchase of pigs or semen as the most important biosecurity measures. Cleaning and disinfection was considered the most important in indoor settings, while pig mixing was highest in outdoor settings. This study highlights the similarities and differences in prioritized biosecurity measures between indoor and outdoor systems and pathogens.

Hepatitis E Virus Species C Infection in Humans, Hong Kong

Siddharth Sridhar et al.

Summary: This study investigated human HEV-C1 infections detected in Hong Kong, with a focus on outcomes in immunocompromised individuals. The findings showed that immunocompromised HEV-C1-infected patients frequently progress to persistent HEV-C1 infection, for which ribavirin is a suitable treatment option.

Hepatitis E in immunocompromised individuals

Konstantinos Damiris et al.

Summary: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a common cause of viral hepatitis, especially in developing countries. There are four main genotypes that infect humans, with HEV1 and HEV2 being more common in developing countries through contaminated water, and HEV3 and HEV4 being more common in animals and occasionally transmitted to humans through fecal contamination or undercooked meat. HEV infection is usually self-limited, but it can be life-threatening in immunocompromised individuals, such as organ transplant recipients. Treatment options include reducing immunosuppressive therapies and antiviral medications like ribavirin and pegylated interferon alpha.

Hepatitis E Virus Occurrence in Pigs Slaughtered in Italy

Eleonora Chelli et al.

Summary: Hepatitis E is recognized as an emerging zoonotic disease in Europe, caused by an RNA virus transmitted through foodborne routes. The study investigated the prevalence of HEV-positive pigs during slaughtering, with results showing that the virus mainly resides in the liver rather than muscles, and the age of animals affects the positivity rate.

Seroprevalence of Hepatitis E Virus Infection Among Wild Boars in Western Bulgaria

Ilia Tsachev et al.

Summary: The seroprevalence study of HEV in wild boars in western Bulgaria revealed an overall seroprevalence of 40.8%, with a slightly higher seroprevalence observed in the southwestern region compared to the northwestern region. This research provides valuable information for understanding the prevalence of HEV in wild boars in the region.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of HEV infection among pigs of different ages along the production chain and how long the virus can persist in the farm environment. The results showed a 23.8% positivity rate of HEV-RNA in pigs on a farm in Northern Italy, indicating the circulation of HEV-3 strain in pigs before slaughtering.

Summary: Information on hepatitis E virus (HEV) strains circulating in animal reservoirs in Bulgaria is currently lacking. Screening seropositive sera obtained from Bulgarian swine and wild boars revealed viral RNA at high prevalence rate in the industrial pigs population along with genetic correlation with HEVs of genotype 3. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Bulgarian strains clustered closely with human and animal HEVs classified within the Gt3 subtype c.
