An opinion on Wastewater-Based Epidemiological Monitoring (WBEM) with Clinical Diagnostic Test (CDT) for detecting high-prevalence areas of community COVID-19 infections

Md. Aminul Islam et al.

Summary: Wastewater-Based Epidemiological Monitoring (WBEM) is a highly efficient surveillance tool during the COVID-19 pandemic. It can be used to track the disease's prevalence, genetic diversity, and emerging variants. However, it is complemented by Clinical Diagnostic Tests (CDTs) which are considered the global gold standard for disease monitoring but have limitations in tracking asymptomatic patients. This study proposes a combined approach using both wastewater and clinical samples for detecting COVID-19 infection in communities, which can be a feasible and effective long-term nationwide surveillance system.

The dynamic relationship between COVID-19 cases and SARS-CoV-2 wastewater concentrations across time and space: Considerations for model training data sets

Rebecca Schill et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater-based surveillance has been used to monitor infection rates. Factors such as sampling frequency and population size affect the relationship between wastewater and case data. The lead and lag times between wastewater and case data vary, and the ratio of individual cases to wastewater concentrations changes over time.

Wastewater-based epidemiology for early warning of SARS-COV-2 circulation: A pilot study conducted in Sicily, Italy

Carmelo Massimo Maida et al.

Summary: There is increasing evidence that wastewater-based epidemiology can be used to monitor and assess the prevalence of viruses in a specific area. This study conducted environmental surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater samples collected from wastewater treatment plants in central and western Sicily. The results showed a correlation between the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater samples and the reported cases in the same areas. The findings suggest that this method can be a useful tool in epidemic management, especially in areas with moderate or high viral circulation.

Modeling the number of people infected with SARS-COV-2 from wastewater viral load in Northwest Spain

Juan A. Vallejo et al.

Summary: The quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA load in wastewater has emerged as a useful tool to monitor COVID-19 outbreaks in communities. This approach was implemented in the metropolitan area of A Coruna, where wastewater analysis helped track the epidemic dynamics. Regression models allowed estimation of the number of infected individuals and served as an effective early warning tool for predicting outbreaks in the municipality.

Effectiveness of environmental surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 as an early warning system during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic review

Susanne Hyllestad et al.

Summary: Environmental surveillance (ES) of SARS-CoV-2 can serve as an early warning system (EWS) for COVID-19 and new variants of concern, but its effectiveness has not been systematically evaluated and quantified. While ES may function as an EWS within 1-2 weeks, its cost-benefit value for public health decisions needs to be assessed based on the stage of the pandemic and available resources.

Effect of Time and Temperature on SARS-CoV-2 in Municipal Wastewater Conveyance Systems

Melissa K. Schussman et al.

Summary: This study examined the influences of pre-analytical factors on SARS-CoV-2 loads in wastewater surveillance. The results showed that time and flow had varying effects on the viral concentrations, while temperature reduction led to a significant decrease in the concentrations. Oxygen demand and suspended solids did not have a significant effect on the virus loads.

Detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater and treated effluents: Surveillance of COVID-19 epidemic in the United Arab Emirates

Shadi W. Hasan et al.

Summary: Testing SARS-CoV-2 viral loads in wastewater in the United Arab Emirates revealed fluctuating levels in different locations, with government precautionary measures correlating with a decrease in viral loads. None of the 11 wastewater treatment plants' effluents tested positive, indicating the efficiency of treatment technologies in degrading the virus and the safety of treated reused water.

SARS-CoV-2 RNA monitoring in wastewater as a potential early warning system for COVID-19 transmission in the community: A temporal case study

Warish Ahmed et al.

Summary: Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater can serve as an early warning system to identify viral hotspots and target localized public health responses. This method provides unique information on asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic cases that may not be captured by clinical testing, showing potential for effective disease surveillance.

Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in municipal wastewater to evaluate the success of lockdown measures for controlling COVID-19 in the UK

Luke S. Hillary et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels in wastewater generally corresponded with the number of clinical cases in large urban centers, decreasing significantly after lockdown measures were implemented. Genetic sequencing of the virus in wastewater revealed multiple distinct clusters circulating in the local population, reflecting similarities with SNPs found in clinical samples. The findings suggest that wastewater-based epidemiology can be a valuable tool for monitoring and tracking the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses in the community, aiding in public health policy decisions.
