Risk of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis E virus infection from pool-tested platelets and plasma

Summary: The study found that using a limit of detection of 2,000 IU/ml reduced the risk of transfusion-transmitted HEV infection for red blood cell concentrates by about 73%, but only by 42% for platelet and fresh frozen plasma transfusions. Single donor screening with a lower limit of <32 IU/ml could lead to almost 100% risk reduction.

Summary: This study investigated the seroepidemiology, risk factors, and prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) among high-risk patients in Turkey. The results showed a low viremia rate (0.6%) but a high seroprevalence rate (9.9%). The emergence of HEV genotype 3 was found to be a serious problem for these patients. Older age and eating undercooked meat were identified as independent risk factors for anti-HEV seropositivity.

Depletion of alveolar macrophages protects mice from weight loss and reduces viral loads in the lungs during RSV infection. Targeting TNF and/or the necroptotic machinery may be valuable therapeutic approaches to reduce respiratory morbidity caused by RSV infection in young children.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and evolution of AIH- and PBC-related autoantibodies in Chinese patients with acute HEV infection. The results showed that autoantibodies were frequently present during acute HEV infection and some patients maintained or developed autoantibodies even after viral clearance, with one patient developing PBC. Long-term follow-up is essential for these individuals.
