Environmental challenges of COVID-19 pandemic: resilience and sustainability-A review

Anusha Ekanayake et al.

Summary: The relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and the environment is bidirectional, with the environment playing a role in the transmission of the virus. The pandemic has potential environmental impacts such as water pollution, chemical contamination, increased generation of non-biodegradable waste, and an increase in single-use plastics. Sustainable solutions should be included in national preparedness strategies to address these environmental challenges.

Risks of mucormycosis in the current Covid-19 pandemic: a clinical challenge in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients

P. Monika et al.

Summary: Mucormycosis, also known as Black Fungus, is causing concern in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. It primarily affects immunocompromised patients, including those with diabetes, malignancies, organ and stem cell transplants, and those afflicted with Covid-19. Delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis as Covid-19 or other diseases can lead to treatment failure. The mortality rate for secondary infections in Covid-19 patients with uncontrolled diabetes and on steroid therapy can reach 100% if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Immunocompetent individuals with late diagnosis are also at risk for infection. This comprehensive review provides insights into the risks, diagnosis challenges, and treatment difficulties of Mucormycosis, with a particular focus on Covid-19 associated cases. Precautions and care for effectively managing Mucormycosis in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients are discussed, aiding clinicians in the current Covid-19 pandemic.

A microbiome study reveals the potential relationship between the bacterial diversity of a gymnastics hall and human health

Z. Liang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the abundant bacterial species biodiversity on gymnasts and apparatuses from two gymnastics halls in western China. Some opportunistic pathogens and infectious agents associated with cancer induction were detected on athletes and equipment. The bacterial biomarker groups of the two gymnasiums were different, suggesting the need to consider indoor microbial biodiversity and related public health problems in school gymnasiums.

Indoor green wall affects health-associated commensal skin microbiota and enhances immune regulation: a randomized trial among urban office workers

L. Soininen et al.

Summary: Urbanization reduces microbiological abundance and diversity, while urban greening, particularly through air-circulating green walls, can restore microbiological diversity and potentially benefit human health. This study found that installing air-circulating green walls in offices increased the abundance and diversity of beneficial bacteria on human skin, while also reducing the level of a proinflammatory cytokine. These findings suggest that air-circulating green walls have the potential to modulate the human microbiome and should be further studied for their immunomodulatory effects.

Summary: The fungal diversity in problem-free Danish homes differs from outdoors, and the species composition indoors varies from those found as spores inside and outside. ITS sequencing of dust samples supported by thorough building inspections is an adequate method to assess fungal issues. Food products also play a significant role in the composition of baseline spora.

Investigation and disinfection of bacteria and fungi in sports fitness center

Nonglak Boonrattanakij et al.

Summary: This study examined the improvement of air quality in a fitness center's exercise room under normal operating conditions, focusing on bacterial and fungal contamination. Chlorine dioxide and weak acid hypochlorous water aerosols were found to be more effective in removing bacteria and fungi than water scrubbing, with a 15-minute contact time sufficient to meet air quality standards. User density and carbon dioxide levels had a significant impact on the disinfection performance of bacteria and fungi, while temperature specifically affected fungi disinfection.

Microbial exposures that establish immunoregulation are compatible with targeted hygiene

Graham A. W. Rook et al.

Summary: This article highlights the importance of children being exposed to microbiotas from their mothers, other family members, and the natural environment, while deeming exposure to modern home microbiota less relevant. Additionally, the nonspecific effects of vaccines may partially replace the benefits of exposure to childhood infections in the household setting. Effective hygiene practices should be targeted at key risk moments and sites to maximize protection against infection.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household disinfectant consumption behaviors and related environmental concerns: A questionnaire-based survey in China

Jie Guo et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant increase in household disinfectant consumption and usage levels in China, with chlorine-based and alcohol-based disinfectants being the most preferred products for household disinfection and hand sanitization. However, the Chinese public's environmental perceptions and practices regarding disinfectants were found to be poor, with less than half of respondents showing positive attitudes towards controlling disinfectant pollution. Targeted efforts may be needed for population groups such as females, middle-aged adults, healthcare professionals, and those with higher education levels to improve future control of disinfectant pollution in the environment.
