Molecular detection of Hepatozoon species infections in domestic cats living in Germany

Summary: The prevalence of Hepatozoon species in cats living in Germany was determined to be 7%, with all positive cases imported from the Mediterranean or south-eastern Europe. Infections are usually subclinical, but screening imported cats may be useful for preventing local transmission. No evidence of autochthonous infections was found, but further investigations on transmission to arthropods in Germany are recommended. Ectoparasite prophylaxis is advisable to prevent potential spread of the pathogens.

Cytauxzoon europaeus infections in domestic cats in Switzerland and in European wildcats in France: a tale that started more than two decades ago

Summary: This study reports the occurrence of tick-borne protozoan parasites in ticks and tissues of wild cats, mustelids, and red squirrels in Hungary. Several new genotypes of Hepatozoon and Cytauxzoon species were identified, including a new genotype of Hepatozoon fells in wild cats. New tick-host associations were also observed. The study suggests that H. fells and H. mortis can survive transstadially in different tick species.

First Record of Hepatozoon spp. in Alpine Wild Rodents: Implications and Perspectives for Transmission Dynamics across the Food Web

Summary: The epidemiology of Hepatozoon spp. in natural systems and wild hosts has been poorly investigated. In this study, the prevalence and distribution of Hepatozoon spp. in 11 small mammal species along an altitudinal gradient in the Italian Alps were determined using molecular PCR-based methods. The results provide insights into the prevalence and maintenance of Hepatozoon spp. in alpine small mammal habitats and highlight the need for further investigation on the transmission pathway and ecological role of these parasites.
