Alternatives to antibiotics for organic poultry production: types, modes of action and impacts on bird's health and production

Mohamed E. Abd El-Hack et al.

Summary: The poultry industry plays a significant role in addressing the nutritional gap in many countries by providing protein-rich meat and eggs at a lower cost than other animal meat sources. Following the ban of antibiotic growth promoters, natural alternatives such as probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, essential oils, and other feed additives have gained popularity in the poultry industry for their unique properties and positive impact on poultry production. They can easily be mixed with other feed ingredients, improve feed intake and conversion rate, enhance bird immunity and digestion, reduce antibiotic usage, and provide healthy organic products for human consumption.

Supplemental Bacillus subtilis DSM 29784 and enzymes, alone or in combination, as alternatives for antibiotics to improve growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, anti-oxidative status, immune response and the intestinal barrier of broiler chickens

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of Bacillus subtilis and enzymes as antibiotic replacements for broiler chickens, showing improved growth performance, enhanced antioxidative capacity, and positive impacts on digestive enzyme activity and intestinal microbiota. Bacillus subtilis or enzymes could be considered as alternatives to antibiotics for broiler chickens.

Evaluation of a Biocide Used in the Biological Isolation and Containment Unit of a Veterinary Teaching Hospital

Catarina Geraldes et al.

Summary: Hospital-acquired infections are a growing problem worldwide, and the best way to cope with them is through prevention strategies and efficient disinfection protocols. The study showed that the Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of Virkon(S) was at least eight times lower than the regular concentration when no organic matter was present, but rose to 23 times in the presence of organic matter. Additionally, a potential stress-induced response may explain the changes in antimicrobial susceptibility observed after exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of Virkon(S).

Prevalence, Laboratory Findings and Clinical Characteristics of Campylobacteriosis Agents among Hospitalized Children with Acute Gastroenteritis in Lebanon

Ghassan Ghssein et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of Campylobacter infection in hospitalized children with acute gastroenteritis in South Lebanon is 12.02%. Patients infected with Campylobacter tended to have more severe symptoms, such as high-grade fever, frequent diarrhea, and dehydration. Detection of Campylobacter infection is important for the accurate diagnosis of gastroenteritis in Lebanon.
