Experimental study of thermal management system for cylindrical Li-ion battery pack based on nanofluid cooling and copper sheath

Amirhosein Sarchami et al.

Summary: A novel thermal management system was developed and studied experimentally to control the temperature of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries. The study found that increasing the concentration of alumina nanoparticles and inflow velocity can significantly reduce the maximum temperature and temperature non-uniformity, while liquid cooling with stair channel can effectively reduce the temperature of the battery pack.

A novel methodology to estimate the state-of-health and remaining-useful-life of a Li-ion battery using discrete Fourier transformation

Jeemut Bahan Sangiri et al.

Summary: This study adopts a multiphysics-based modeling approach and uses discrete Fourier transform (DFT) analysis to diagnose the state-of-health (SoH) of a battery. The electrochemical model, verified through experiments, is based on the pseudo-2-dimensional (P2D) porous electrode model. The battery is subjected to a constant current with a small sinusoidal perturbation for testing purposes. Different frequency testing pulses are applied to the battery and the corresponding output responses are measured. By examining the change in battery output voltage response, the impact of contributing factors in the electrochemical model on the voltage response is observed. Spectrum analysis using the DFT algorithm reveals the effect of aging on the battery. Mathematical relationships between signal power and cell degrading parameters are established. Finally, a methodology based on signal power values and cell degrading factors is developed to assess the battery's present SoH and remaining useful life (RUL).

Behrooz Ruhani et al.

Summary: This paper simulates the cooling system of a two-dimensional lithium-ion battery pack with 9 battery cells. The study shows that increasing the Reynolds number lowers the maximum temperature of the battery pack. Additionally, increasing the inlet size raises the maximum temperature of all battery cells in the system.

Failure behavior of prismatic Li-ion battery cells under abuse loading condition-A combined experimental and computational study

Feng Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of different loading methods on Li-ion jelly rolls and prismatic battery cells were investigated. The results showed that the shape of the indenter and the loading orientation had significant impacts on the deformation and short circuiting of the cells. A numerical model was developed and used to modify the original battery cell design, leading to improvements in deformation and failure modes. These findings have the potential to enhance the safety of prismatic battery cells in future designs.

Thermal modelling and characteristic evaluation of electric vehicle battery system

Asif Afzal et al.

Summary: The thermal modeling of Li-ion battery system used in electric/hybrid electric vehicles was conducted in this study, focusing on parameters such as flow Reynolds number, battery internal heat generation, and conduction-convection related parameters. The analysis revealed that the length to width ratio of battery does not impact thermal performance, and at lower Reynolds numbers, the conduction-convection parameter plays a significant role in reducing battery temperature. Additionally, channel spacing has a prominent role in variation of battery and coolant temperature.

Summary: This paper investigates a new battery thermal management design, reducing flowrate in the LCP by utilizing ribbed channels with double inlets and outlets, enhancing the hydrothermal performance factor while decreasing friction coefficient and pumping power. The optimized ribbed configuration increases total heat transfer by up to 68%, reduces mass flowrate by 16%, and lowers pumping power by 20% compared to rib-less channels. Meanwhile, the hydrothermal cooling performance factor is enhanced by 58% with the maximum temperature remaining constant.
