Willian G. Nunes et al.

Summary: A double-channel transmission line impedance model was used to investigate the charge transport characteristics in supercapacitors. The study found anomalies in the ionic and electronic transports during the decoration process of carbon-based electrical double-layer capacitors. The impedance model adequately described the charge storage and transport at the interface.

Four stages of thermal effect coupled with ion-charge transports during the charging process of porous electrodes

Pan Huang et al.

Summary: This study applies the stack-electrode model to investigate the thermal effects in porous electrodes. The results show that the temperature rise process has three relaxation times and four stages controlled by heat generation or heat transfer. Analytical formulas for the relaxation times and temperature rise under different structural parameters and heat dissipation intensity are obtained. These formulas can guide the design of cooling methods for supercapacitors during different stages.

In-situ electrochemical and operando Raman techniques to investigate the effect of porosity in different carbon electrodes in organic electrolyte supercapacitors

Raissa Venancio et al.

Summary: This work presents the analysis of micro-, meso-, and macro-porous carbon electrodes in a symmetrical supercapacitor filled with a 1.0 M TEABF(4) EC-DMC electrolyte. The results show that activated carbon (AC) is the most suitable electrode material due to its high specific capacitance and energy. Raman spectroscopy analysis reveals that AC experiences shifts in the D- and G-bands due to electrostatic ionic adsorption in narrow pores. Graphite, though having enough specific capacitance for competitive application, has a reduced overall surface area. Graphite's Raman analysis shows BF4- insertion into graphene layers. Overall, this study demonstrates that in-situ electrochemistry and Raman spectroscopy combined can provide important information on the energy storage process in supercapacitors.

Effect of conductivity, viscosity, and density of water-in-salt electrolytes on the electrochemical behavior of supercapacitors: molecular dynamics simulations and in situ characterization studies

Debora A. C. da Silva et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulations and in situ experimental studies were used to investigate the effects of replacing conventional aqueous-based electrolytes with concentrated water-in-salt systems in supercapacitors. The use of water-in-salt electrolytes was found to increase the electrochemical stability window of the supercapacitor, enabling a wider cell voltage range and specific energy. However, this also led to changes in the physicochemical properties, such as reduced interaction between water molecules and electrodes.

Bruno Morandi Pires et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel composite material of activated carbon and cobalt hexacyanoferrate for use as electrode materials in symmetric supercapacitors. The material combines the high specific surface area and electrochemical stability of activated carbon with the redox properties of cobalt hexacyanoferrate, showing improved specific capacitance and specific energy compared to traditional materials. Electrochemical studies and in situ characterization techniques reveal the key mechanisms of this composite material in the energy storage process.

New Insights on the Sodium Water-in-Salt Electrolyte and Carbon Electrode Interface from Electrochemistry and Operando Raman Studies

Rafael Vicentini et al.

Summary: Comprehensive electrochemical and operando Raman studies were conducted to investigate the electrochemical stability window of supercapacitors using normal and highly concentrated electrolytes. The presence of a solvent blocking interface was confirmed to inhibit water-splitting, while a specific electrolyte was found to prevent water-splitting up to a certain voltage threshold. Additionally, the reversible nature of the charge-storage process was assessed under different polarization conditions.
