Overview of the development and status of carbon dioxide (R-744) refrigeration systems onboard fishing vessels

Engin Soylemez et al.

Summary: Currently, most fishing vessels still use the ozone-depleting and climate-harmful R-22 as the refrigerant in their freezing and refrigeration systems. However, in some regions, there is a shift towards using the natural refrigerants ammonia and carbon dioxide (R-744). This review highlights the potential of R-744 refrigeration technology on fishing vessels and recommends further research and innovation in this field.

Parallel and in-series arrangements of zeotropic dual-pressure Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for low-grade waste heat recovery

Zhanying Zheng et al.

Summary: Due to the recent interest in renewable energy and waste heat for power generation, the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) has gained significant attention. By utilizing a dual-pressure evaporation strategy, the system performance can be improved by reducing the exergy loss in the evaporators. The study evaluates the effect of zeotropic working fluids on two dual-pressure ORC (DPORC) configurations, DPORC-P (parallel) and DPORC-S (in-series), using the working fluid pair R245fa and R152a as a representative zeotropic mixture. The results show that using a zeotropic mixture leads to improved cycle net power outputs in both systems. Additionally, the influence of zeotropic fluids on condenser heat transfer is investigated, highlighting the need for a larger heat transfer area for a zeotropic fluid to enhance system performance.
