The increasing prevalence of autoimmunity and autoimmune diseases: an urgent call to action for improved understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention

Frederick W. Miller

Summary: Autoimmunity is increasing globally, likely due to changes in environmental factors. Factors such as food, xenobiotics, pollution, infections, personal lifestyles, stress, and climate change are implicated in this increase. Autoimmune diseases have a significant impact on individuals, families, society, and healthcare costs, and efforts should be made to understand their risk factors and pathogenesis, and improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Gut Microbial Antigenic Mimicry in Autoimmunity

Nahir Garabatos et al.

Summary: The composition of the gut microbiota is closely related to the development of various autoimmune diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease and multiple sclerosis. Antigenic mimicry and the impact on effector and regulatory T cells are important mechanisms involved in this process.

TCR-like antibodies targeting autoantigen-mhc complexes: a mini-review

Ying Li et al.

Summary: T cell receptors (TCRs) and B cell-derived antibodies (Abs) play crucial roles in immune surveillance and response against antigens. However, autoimmune diseases can occur when self-tolerance is broken and autoreactive T cells are activated. Recent advances in TCRL Abs offer new possibilities for targeted immunotherapy of autoimmune diseases.

A Sweep of Earth's Virome Reveals Host-Guided Viral Protein Structural Mimicry and Points to Determinants of Human Disease

Gorka Lasso et al.

Summary: This study reveals that viruses widely employ molecular mimicry as a strategy, with over 70% of viral mimics unable to be discerned through protein sequence alone. The manner and degree to which viruses exploit molecular mimicry vary by genome size and nucleic acid type, with coronaviruses mimicking 158 human proteins providing clues about pathogenesis.
