The Use and Limitations of the 16S rRNA Sequence for Species Classification of Anaplasma Samples

Mitchell T. Caudill et al.

Summary: With the advancement of high-throughput sequencing technologies, the ability to explore unknown niches and geographies in terms of biodiversity has greatly expanded. However, the classification of new species within the genus Anaplasma has been restricted due to the intracellular nature of these bacteria. This study highlights the limitations of using 16S rRNA gene sequence alone for species identification and provides key bases for classifying formally named species of Anaplasma.

Both Coinfection and Superinfection Drive Complex Anaplasma marginale Strain Structure in a Natural Transmission Setting

Roberta Koku et al.

Summary: This study found that in a high transmission setting, 97% of animals in a herd were infected with multiple strains of Anaplasma marginale. Prior to seroconversion, individual animals typically harbored three to four strains, while one to two new strains were detected following seroconversion. The number of strains acquired via superinfection was found to be 16% lower on average than the number acquired via coinfection, indicating that coinfection predominates in this transmission setting.
