Fungal biodegradation of chlorinated herbicides: an overview with an emphasis on 2,4-D in Argentina

Karen Magnoli et al.

Summary: Chlorinated herbicides, such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), are widely used in agriculture but pose significant risks to the environment and human health. Filamentous fungi have shown potential in bioremediation of these pollutants, but research on their ability to degrade 2,4-D is limited, especially in Argentina. The introduction of detoxifying microorganisms into contaminated environments also requires evaluation of their safety and is regulated by legal frameworks.

Biofilm formation in xenobiotic-degrading microorganisms

Pankaj Bhatt et al.

Summary: The increased presence of xenobiotics has a global impact on living organisms and the environment. Microbial degradation through the formation of biofilms is an effective method to remove xenobiotics from the ecosystem. Biofilms are formed by microbial populations attaching to surfaces and interfaces via extracellular polymeric substances. Quorum sensing plays a role in biofilm formation. However, there is limited information on the biofilm-mediated degradation of toxic chemicals from the environment.

Bioremediation potential of laccase for catalysis of glyphosate, isoproturon, lignin, and parathion: Molecular docking, dynamics, and simulation

Pankaj Bhatt et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the catalytic degradation of glyphosate, isoproturon, lignin polymer, and parathion by laccase. The study utilizes molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation approaches to explore the interactions between laccase and these compounds. The results show that laccase interacts well with the compounds during biodegradation and remains stable throughout the process. This study provides valuable insights into the molecular-level biodegradation of xenobiotic compounds and their potential application in contaminant removal.

Summary: Since the concept of bioremediation was introduced, microorganisms, microbial enzymes, and plants have been used as principal elements for Organophosphate pesticide (OPP) bioremediation. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and constructed wetlands (CWs) have brought new prospects to OPP biodegradation strategies. Application of synthetic biology, system biology, and bioinformatics tools have provided significant knowledge regarding the genetic, enzymatic, and biochemical aspects of OPP biodegradation.

Biotechnological basis of microbial consortia for the removal of pesticides from the environment

Pankaj Bhatt et al.

Summary: Microbial strains as axenic cultures have been widely used in various sectors, with natural environment emphasizing the importance of multi-species consortia over monocultures. Cell signaling and communication pathways are crucial in engineering microbial consortia, where communication occurs through diffusible signal molecules. The lack of knowledge regarding interactions among mixed microbial cultures has hindered their exploration, but recent studies have proposed ideas for studying microbial communities for biotechnological applications. Unique metabolic features of microbes in natural environments are divided among strains within microbial consortia, which exhibit robust performance in pesticide degradation. Additionally, synthetic microbial consortia have shown promise in performing functions at naturally contaminated sites. This review focuses on the applications and future directions of microbial consortia, exploring new platforms and future perspectives while emphasizing the practical application of scientific information.
