Show Me What You Have Inside-The Complex Interplay between SIBO and Multiple Medical Conditions-A Systematic Review

Natalia Sroka et al.

Summary: Imbalanced gut microbiota can have a significant impact on the organism's homeostasis, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a potential cause of functional gastrointestinal disorders and other chronic diseases. There has been increasing interest in studying the influence of SIBO on the whole human body and individual systems, and research has confirmed its role in various medical fields. Antibiotic therapy can reduce the occurrence of SIBO, leading to relief of gastrointestinal symptoms and manifestations of comorbid diseases.

Host Factors Associated with Gut Mycobiome Structure

Natalia Szostak et al.

Summary: The human gut is inhabited by many organisms, including bacteria and fungi, that may affect human health. Research on human gut mycobiome is rare, but recent studies have shown its significant role in human health. This study investigated the gut mycobiota of a large European population and found that diet, age, and marital status were associated with the variation in the gut fungal community.

Personality, Anxiety, and Stress in Patients with Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth Syndrome. The Polish Preliminary Study

Joanna Kossewska et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the correlation between personality traits, situational anxiety, and stress in Polish patients with SIBO for the first time. The results showed that compared to non-SIBO patients, SIBO patients had specific patterns of personality traits: higher neuroticism, lower extroversion, and a higher state of anxiety and stress.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: A case-control study

Uday C. Ghoshal et al.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially those with Crohn's disease (CD), female gender, and a history of surgery, have a higher risk of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) compared to healthy controls, as shown by the results of glucose hydrogen breath testing (GHBT). Factors associated with SIBO included female gender, surgical history, lower levels of total serum protein and albumin, as well as higher values of maximum breath hydrogen and area under the curve for breath hydrogen in CD patients.

Cezary Chojnacki et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate selected metabolites of the tryptophan kynurenine pathway in depressive patients with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The study found that patients with SIBO had higher levels of kynurenine and quinolinic acid, and these levels were associated with abdominal symptoms and mental disorders.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth in Patients with Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass

Urska Novljan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) after bariatric bypass procedures and its connection with symptoms, comorbidities, and liver pathology. The results showed a alarmingly high incidence of SIBO after bariatric surgery and suggested that diagnosis cannot be based solely on specific symptoms. The study also found a correlation between SIBO and reduced response to low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) application.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the gastrointestinal microflora plays a significant role in the development of chronic diseases. Imbalances in the composition of microbes in the gut can lead to various diseases and conditions. Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a lesser-known condition that can occur in patients with hypochlorhydria and small intestine cancers.

The role of microbiota and enteroendocrine cells in maintaining homeostasis in the human digestive tract

Dagmara Wozniak et al.

Summary: The microbiota is essential for maintaining human body homeostasis, with the ability to produce hormones, influence food processing, and regulate digestion. Enteroendocrine cells play a crucial role in responding to gut microbiota and interact with diet, microbiota, and enterohormones to impact metabolism.
