Antibiotypes and high frequency of toxin genes in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius from nares of dogs and dog guardians in Nigeria

Ikechukwu Benjamin Moses et al.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency of antibiotic resistance and toxin genes in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) in dogs and dog guardians in Abakaliki, Southeastern Nigeria. The results showed that both dogs and dog guardians were colonized by drug-resistant MRSP strains, and these strains carried various toxin genes.

Risk Factors for Antimicrobial Resistance of Staphylococcus Species Isolated from Dogs with Superficial Pyoderma and Their Owners

Cheng-Hung Lai et al.

Summary: The study investigates the bacterial species causing canine superficial pyoderma and characterizes the antibiotic-resistant profiles and drug-resistant genes of isolated Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (S. pseudintermedius). It finds that S. pseudintermedius is the major pathogen, and strains containing mecA and blaZ genes show multiple-drug resistance. The study also evaluates the possible risk factors causing S. pseudintermedius colonization in dog owners.

Ad hoc method for the assessment of animal diseases caused by bacteria resistant to antimicrobials

Summary: The European Commission requested EFSA to assess antimicrobial-resistant bacteria responsible for animal transmissible diseases, in order to list such pathogens for European Union action. The Scientific Opinion developed an ad hoc method to assess the state of resistant animal pathogens, identify relevant bacteria in the EU, and summarize their impact on animal health for listing and categorization within the Animal Health Law framework.

Hiroki Kitagawa et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is commonly associated with skin and soft tissue infections in dogs, but rarely reported in humans. We report a case of implanted port catheter system infection caused by methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius in a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma, who is also a dog owner. The MRSP strain was identified as sequence type 71 carrying staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec type III.

Industrial dog food is a vehicle of multidrug-resistant enterococci carrying virulence genes often linked to human infections

Liliana Finisterra et al.

Summary: The study found that commercial dog food samples commonly harbor Enterococcus strains resistant to multiple antibiotics, particularly last resort antibiotics. Most resistant strains were from raw, untreated samples, exhibiting multidrug resistance, indicating pet food as a significant vehicle for antibiotic resistance spread globally.

Summary: This study compared the genetic relatedness and antimicrobial resistance genes of canine and human S. pseudintermedius isolates. The high genetic diversity in MSSP isolates from both hosts and the importance of multidrug resistance were highlighted, with CC241 being a prevalent multidrug resistance genotype. No host-specific genes were significantly associated with either human or canine isolates in this genomic analysis.
