Nasonia-microbiome associations: a model for evolutionary hologenomics research

Zhengyu Zhu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the key advances in Nasonia-microbiome interactions. The advantages of Nasonia as a model organism for microbiome studies are outlined, along with the research methods and recent discoveries in Nasonia microbiome research. The complexities of Nasonia-microbiome relationships will contribute to the understanding of animal-microbiome interactions and future research directions in this field.

Forests influence yeast populations vectored by insects into vineyards

Beatrice Valentini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the links between wooded areas, social wasps, and the composition of vineyard mycobiota. The results demonstrate that vineyards near wooded areas have a different mycobiota profile vectored by social wasps compared to vineyards far from woods. The study highlights the importance of maintaining a vineyard-woodland mosaic landscape to preserve the suitable habitat for yeast species relevant to wine-making.

Antibiotics from Insect-Associated Actinobacteria

Anna A. Baranova et al.

Summary: Insect-associated actinomycetes are an underexplored ecological niche with potential for discovering novel antimicrobial compounds. The interactions between insects and actinobacteria are regulated by antibiotics and are important for the stability of ecosystems and agricultural production.

Streptomyces sp. M54: an actinobacteria associated with a neotropical social wasp with high potential for antibiotic production

Bernal Matarrita-Carranza et al.

Summary: Insects symbiotic with Streptomyces have been identified as a promising source for new antibiotics. The genome of Streptomyces sp. M54, associated with the eusocial wasp Polybia plebeja, was found to harbor multiple gene clusters for secondary metabolites and produce antimicrobial compounds active against both natural enemies and human pathogens. Phylogenetic and genomic analyses revealed the relationship of Streptomyces sp. M54 with other host-associated strains, highlighting its potential for novel antibiotic discovery.

Ecosystem services provided by aculeate wasps

Ryan E. Brock et al.

Summary: Aculeate wasps are diverse insects that play important roles in ecosystems, yet their ecosystem services are not well understood compared to other insect groups. Their economic value is mainly reflected in their roles in natural pest management and biological control programs.
