Family Myrtaceae: The treasure hidden in the complex/diverse composition

Fatema R. Saber et al.

Summary: Myrtaceae is an important flowering plant family, including various genera of ecological and economic importance. The extraction of bioactive compounds from Myrtaceae plants has been improved through the optimization of traditional methods and the use of emerging technologies. Encapsulation and delivery systems have shown promising results in producing stable essential oil nanoemulsions and liposomes. The application of Myrtaceae extracts in the pharmaceutical field and certain plants in the food area has also demonstrated interesting results. However, further advancements are needed to optimize environmentally friendly extraction methods and conduct risk assessment studies for their full potential in various applications.

α-Pinene: Docking Study, Cytotoxicity, Mechanism of Action, and Anti-Biofilm Effect against Candida albicans

Daniela Bomfim de Barros et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the fungicidal and anti-biofilm activity of alpha-pinene against Candida albicans through in silico and in vitro tests, and assessed its toxicity on human cells. Results showed that alpha-pinene interacts with ergosterol in the cellular membrane, exhibiting antifungal activity independent of time, inhibiting biofilm formation and disrupting existing biofilms up to 88%. It was also found to be non-cytotoxic to human keratinocytes. The study suggests that alpha-pinene has the potential to be a candidate for treating fungal infections caused by C. albicans.

Antibacterial Activity and Epigenetic Remodeling of Essential Oils from Calabrian Aromatic Plants

Patrizia D'Aquila et al.

Summary: Essential oils extracted from aromatic plants have been found to have nutritional, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, and can be used as food preservatives. This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of essential oils from ten aromatic plants grown in Italy. The essential oils from Clinopodium nepeta, Origanum vulgare, and Foeniculum vulgare showed the strongest inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. Furthermore, it is possible that epigenetic modifications mediate the antibacterial activity of essential oils.

Comparative Study of Antibacterial, Antibiofilm, Antiswarming and Antiquorum Sensing Activities of Origanum vulgare Essential Oil and Terpinene-4-ol against Pathogenic Bacteria

Abderrahmen Merghni et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the antimicrobial, antibiofilm, anti-quorum-sensing, and anti-swarming effects of Oregano vulgare essential oil (EO) and terpinene-4-ol against pathogenic bacterial strains. The results showed that EO had stronger inhibitory effects on most tested strains, while terpinene-4-ol was more effective against established Staphylococcus aureus biofilms. Additionally, O. vulgare displayed better anti-quorum-sensing activity and inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 migration compared to terpinene-4-ol.
