Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Virulence Factor α-Hemolysin Reduces Histone Acetylation to Inhibit Expression of Proinflammatory Cytokine Genes

Zhengguo Zhang et al.

Summary: UPEC infection manipulates host cell metabolism to inhibit inflammatory cytokine production by suppressing ATP citrate lyase, leading to reduced histone acetylation and decreased expression of immune response genes. This effect can be reversed by acetate supplementation and improves tissue recovery in a murine cystitis model.

Persister Escherichia coli Cells Have a Lower Intracellular pH than Susceptible Cells but Maintain Their pH in Response to Antibiotic Treatment

Olivia Goode et al.

Summary: Persisters have a lower intracellular pH compared to VBNC and susceptible cells even before exposure to antibiotics, which is linked to the activity of the enzyme tryptophanase. In the absence of tryptophanase, there is no difference in intracellular pH among persister, VBNC, and susceptible E. coli cells.Whole-genome transcriptomic analysis showed that the regulation of intracellular pH varies within a clonal population, with a subset of cells displaying differential pH regulation to perform specific functions, including survival after antibiotic treatment.
