Introducing the Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC): a resource combining PATRIC, IRD and ViPR

Robert D. Olson et al.

Summary: This report introduces the Bioinformatics Resource Center program established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to aid researchers in analyzing genome sequences and other omics-related data. The merger of PATRIC, IRD, and ViPR BRCs has resulted in the formation of BV-BRC, which offers a unified data model, enhanced visualization and analysis tools, bioinformatics services, and a powerful suite of command line tools for the bacterial and viral research communities.

The Distribution of Dengue Virus Serotype in Quang Nam Province (Vietnam) during the Outbreak in 2018

Duong Q. Phan et al.

Summary: An outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever occurred in Quang Nam province, Vietnam in 2018. This study aimed to detect different dengue virus serotypes in patients' blood samples. The results showed that the D4 serotype had the highest detection rate among the 273 patients. Additionally, the study found that RT-rPCR had higher sensitivity than NS1 in the early stage of infection.

Emergence of Dengue Virus Serotype 2 Cosmopolitan Genotype, Brazil

Marta Giovanetti et al.

Summary: In this study, a cosmopolitan genotype of dengue virus serotype 2 was identified in a 56-year-old male patient from the state of Goias in Brazil using nanopore sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. The emergence of this genotype in Brazil highlights the need for risk assessment and surveillance to mitigate its epidemic potential.

The 2017 Dengue virus 1 outbreak in northern Vietnam was caused by a locally circulating virus group

Taichiro Takemura et al.

Summary: This study identified the genetic characteristics of the Dengue virus type 1 outbreak in northern Vietnam and neighboring areas. Whole-genome sequencing analysis showed that the outbreak virus belonged to genotype I of DENV1, which is dominant in Southeast and East Asian countries. The results suggested that the 2017 outbreak in the area was caused by locally circulating viruses.

Emergence of dengue virus serotype 2 in Mauritania and molecular characterization of its circulation in West Africa

Toscane Fourie et al.

Summary: In recent years, the number of sporadic and epidemic dengue fever cases has been increasing in some West African countries like Senegal and Mali. The first laboratory-confirmed epidemic of dengue fever in Nouakchott, Mauritania was reported in 2014, highlighting the presence of the disease in the region and the need for further virus tracing and research.

An Outbreak of Dengue Virus Serotype 2 Cosmopolitan Genotype in Nepal, 2017

Mya Myat Ngwe Tun et al.

Summary: Dengue virus (DENV) is increasingly prevalent in Nepal, with the most common serotype being DENV-2. Genomic analysis showed multiple amino acid substitutions in the E, NS3, and NS5 genes, and DENV-2 isolates in Nepal were classified into Asian and Indian clades. Further research on different DENV serotypes is needed to understand the epidemics in Nepal.

Potential role of vector-mediated natural selection in dengue virus genotype/lineage replacements in two epidemiologically contrasted settings

Olivia O'Connor et al.

Summary: New Caledonia and Cambodia underwent different DENV-1 genotype/lineage replacements, and experimental results showed that these replacements reflected a higher transmission fitness advantage of the replacing DENV genotype/lineage in the mosquito vector.
