Emerging fish pathogens Lactococcus petauri and L. garvieae in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) farmed in Brazil

Renata Catao Egger et al.

Summary: This study investigated lactococcosis outbreaks in Nile tilapia on Brazilian farms and characterized the isolates through multilocus sequence typing (MLST), virulence to Nile tilapia, and antimicrobial susceptibility. The pathogenicity of L. petauri to Nile tilapia was confirmed, and its rapid expansion was observed. Provisional epidemiological cutoff values were determined for L. petauri for six antimicrobial agents from different drug classes.

Development of a quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay for detection of the aetiological agents of piscine lactococcosis

Khalid Shahin et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the development and validation of a TaqMan qPCR assay for the accurate and early detection of piscine lactococcosis. The developed assay showed high specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy in detecting the causative agents, as well as screening fish and environmental samples. This qPCR assay provides a reliable tool for diagnosing and managing piscine lactococcosis in fish farms and aquariums.

NGS analysis revealed that Lactococcus garvieae Lg-Per was Lactococcus petauri in Turkiye

Ilhan Altinok et al.

Summary: The whole genome sequence of Lactococcus garvieae Lg-per, originally isolated from rainbow trout in Turkey, was analyzed. The study revealed that Lg-per was actually Lactococcus petauri, not L. garvieae as previously believed. The 16S rRNA-based PCR detection method was found to be inadequate for identifying Lactococcus strains. This is the first report of L. petauri in Turkey and highlights the importance of using whole genome sequencing for analyzing L. garvieae isolates in other countries.

What Can Genetics Do for the Control of Infectious Diseases in Aquaculture?

Simona Sciuto et al.

Summary: This review describes the application of genetics and genomics in controlling infectious diseases in aquaculture. Breeding for disease resistance can mitigate the impact of infectious diseases on aquaculture. However, the interaction between host and pathogen during breeding may lead to pathogenic changes. Therefore, the parallel characterization of pathogens and their genes is crucial in understanding pathogen evolution and applying appropriate mitigation strategies.

Genome Sequences of Lactococcus garvieae and Lactococcus petauri Strains Isolated from Traditional Montenegrin Brine Cheeses

Aleksandra Martinovic et al.

Summary: Both Lactococcus garvieae and Lactococcus petauri can cause lactococcosis in fish and have been found in various food products, emerging as potential zoonotic pathogens. This study reports the genomes of L. garvieae INF126 and L. petauri INF110 obtained from traditional Montenegrin brine cheeses.

The unusual isolation of carnobacteria in eyes of healthy salmonids in high-mountain lakes

Paolo Pastorino et al.

Summary: The study found carnobacteria colonization in the eyes of healthy salmonids from high-mountain lakes in Italy, possibly spread through a Trojan-horse effect. It is suggested that terrestrial insects may act as potential vectors for carnobacteria transmission, but further research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.
