Detection and genetic characterization of a putative novel Borrelia genospecies in Ixodes apronophorus/Ixodes persulcatus/Ixodes trianguliceps sympatric areas in Western Siberia

Yuliya Sabitova et al.

Summary: Four genospecies from the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex were detected and genetically characterized in ticks from Siberia. The presence of Borrelia spp. in ticks found in Asia has not been studied before. The study also identified a new Borrelia genovariant in ticks and small mammals, suggesting the potential existence of a new species named Candidatus Borrelia sibirica.

Occurrence and clinical manifestations of tick-borne rickettsioses in Western Siberia: First Russian cases of Rickettsia aeschlimannii and Rickettsia slovaca infections

Yana Igolkina et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the etiologic agents of tick-borne rickettsioses in Western Siberia during three epidemiological seasons. The findings showed that Rickettsia raoultii is a common agent of tick-borne rickettsioses in Novosibirsk Province, and DNA from Rickettsia aeschlimannii and Rickettsia slovaca was found in clinical samples of patients in the Russian Federation for the first time.

Ticks and their epidemiological role in Slovakia: from the past till present

Michal Stanko et al.

Summary: In Slovakia, 22 tick species have been identified, with some species posing public health risks. These ticks carry and transmit various pathogens, including tick-borne encephalitis virus, Borrelia bacteria, and Babesia parasites. Incidence rates of tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis have been increasing in Slovakia, while human cases of rickettsiosis and anaplasmosis remain sporadic.

Candidatus Rickettsia uralica and Candidatus Rickettsia thierseensis are genetic variants of one species

Yana Igolkina et al.

Summary: A new candidate species of the spotted fever group, Candidatus Rickettsia thierseensis, was found in Austria and its gene sequences were highly similar to Candidatus Rickettsia uralica identified in Russia. Comparative sequence analysis confirmed that Candidatus R. uralica and Candidatus R. thierseensis are likely the same species.

Ixodes apronophorus Schulze (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae): Distribution, Abundance, and Diversity of Its Mammal Hosts in West Siberia (Results of a 54-Year Long Surveillance)

Alfried Karimov et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors analyze the abundance, geographical distribution, and host diversity of Ixodes apronophorus in West Siberia. They find that the marsh tick is most common in the northern forest steppe and southern taiga landscape zones, and the European water vole, tundra vole, and Northern red-backed vole play important roles as hosts. The study also reveals a weak but significant negative relationship between the abundances of I. apronophorus and its small mammal hosts.

Prevalence and clinical manifestation of Borrelia miyamotoi in Ixodes ticks and humans in the northern hemisphere: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Dieuwertje Hoornstra et al.

Summary: The study found a high prevalence of B miyamotoi infection in both Ixodes ticks and humans, with significantly higher seroprevalence in humans compared to healthy controls. There were differences in infection rates among different regions and populations, with individuals in Asia showing a higher detection rate. Therefore, B miyamotoi disease should be considered an emerging infectious disease in North America and Asia, requiring further research and increased awareness.

High Prevalence and Low Diversity of Rickettsia in Dermacentor reticulatus Ticks, Central Europe

Alena Balazova et al.

Summary: We collected and analyzed 1,671 Dermacentor reticulatus ticks from 17 locations in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, and found an overall prevalence rate of 47.9% for Rickettsia species in ticks. Sequence analysis confirmed that all tested samples belonged to R. raoultii, the causative agent of tick-borne lymphadenopathy.

Summary: This study detected and identified Rickettsia species in ticks attached to rodents in Estonia. Rickettsial DNA was found in 8.7% of the studied ticks, including the first identification of Candidatus Rickettsia uralica associated with Ixodes trianguliceps west of the Ural Mountains.

Summary: Despite high levels of carriage of these tick-borne agents by Gulf Coast ticks and Lone Star ticks, exchange of these Rickettsia, Coxiella, and Francisella agents between the two tick species appears to be an infrequent event in a natural setting.
