Growth Rates of Vibrio parahaemolyticus Sequence Type 36 Strains in Live Oysters and in Culture Medium

Ava N. Ellett et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increase in Vibrio parahaemolyticus infections in seafood from the northeast United States, with a particular rise in the presence of pathogenic sequence type 36 (ST36) strains. A previous risk assessment model by the FDA raised questions about strain growth differences and the growth rates of invasive pathogenic strains at lower temperatures. This study injected live oysters with ST36 clinical strains and non-ST36 nonclinical strains, and found slightly higher growth rates for ST36 strains at lower temperatures compared to the FDA model.

Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Oysters under Low Tidal Range Conditions: Is Seawater Analysis Useful for Risk Assessment?

Corinne Audemard et al.

Summary: This study found that concentrations of bacteria in seawater can predictably reflect concentrations of the same bacteria in oysters. In regions with low tidal range, seawater samples can be used as an alternative method to assess the risk associated with oysters.

Predicting the growth of the amphibian chytrid fungus in varying temperature environments

Summary: Environmental temperature is a crucial factor influencing the success of ectothermic organisms, and understanding its thermal ecology is essential for predicting disease outbreaks. While the impacts of varying temperatures on disease systems are not well understood, improving methodologies to predict these effects could provide insights and aid conservation efforts.
