LC-MS/MS Validation and Quantification of Cyanotoxins in Algal Food Supplements from the Belgium Market and Their Molecular Origins

Wannes Hugo R. Van Hassel et al.

Summary: Food supplements are gaining popularity worldwide, but they can be contaminated by harmful natural compounds. This study focused on algal food supplements and developed a method to quantify microcystin congeners and nodularin. Analysis of 35 samples showed that nine samples contained microcystin congeners, three of which exceeded the guideline value. The responsible toxin-producing species were identified in seven samples.

Comparison of different hypervariable regions of 16S rRNA for taxonomic profiling of vaginal microbiota using next-generation sequencing

Auttawit Sirichoat et al.

Summary: This study utilized next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the 16S rRNA gene to characterize vaginal microbiota, revealing Lactobacillus, Gardnerella, and Atopobium as the predominant bacterial genera. Different hypervariable regions showed varying levels of bacterial diversity, with selection of appropriate sequences being crucial for reliable information on bacterial community diversity.

Cyanotoxin contamination in commercial Spirulina food supplements

Theodoti Papadimitriou et al.

Summary: Arthrospira (Spirulina) is widely used in food supplementation and is considered a superfood due to its nutritional content. A study in Greece found that while most Spirulina products tested positive for microcystins, the concentrations did not exceed tolerable levels for adults, but were above safe levels for children and infants. Regular monitoring of cyanotoxin levels in Spirulina production is recommended to protect consumers.

Discrimination of Bacillus cereus Group Members by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

Viviana Manzulli et al.

Summary: MALDI-TOF MS technology is used to analyze 160 strains belonging to the Bacillus cereus group, detecting specific biomarkers for unequivocal identification. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to compare mass spectra and generate algorithms for rapid automatic detection. Specific biomarkers can be used for strain differentiation and reliable identification of Bacillus anthracis, offering time advantage for diagnosis and management of human anthrax.
