Blastocystis occurrence in water sources worldwide from 2005 to 2022: a review

Achigili Okau Attah et al.

Summary: There has been increasing interest in the study of Blastocystis in the last two decades, but little is known about its occurrence in water sources worldwide. This study aimed to assess the occurrence of Blastocystis in water sources from 2005 to 2022 and examine the distribution of subtypes. A literature search identified 25 articles from 15 countries, revealing varied occurrence across different water sources. The parasite's presence was significantly associated with environmental factors. Eleven Blastocystis subtypes were identified globally, with ST1 and ST3 being the most prevalent. Further research using molecular and electron microscopic techniques is needed to understand subtype distribution and morphological characteristics in water sources. Current studies have only covered about 10% of countries worldwide.

Identification and Molecular Characterization of Four New Blastocystis Subtypes Designated ST35-ST38

Jenny G. Maloney et al.

Summary: Three recent studies found four novel sequences in mammalian hosts infected with Blastocystis, with B. lapemi as the most similar sequence. However, full-length ssu rRNA gene sequences were not available to confirm the validity of these new subtypes. This study used Nanopore MinION sequencing to obtain full-length reference sequences for each of the new subtypes, and confirmed their validity through phylogenetic analysis and pairwise distance comparisons. The proposed subtype designations for the novel sequences in this study are ST35-ST38, which will aid in future accurate sequence descriptions and studies of Blastocystis epidemiology and subtype diversity.

Detection, Molecular Identification and Transmission of the Intestinal Protozoa Blastocystis sp. in Guinea from a Large-Scale Epidemiological Study Conducted in the Conakry Area

Timothe Guilavogui et al.

Summary: Blastocystis sp. is a common single-celled parasite that colonizes the digestive tract of 1-2 billion people worldwide. This study investigated the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis sp. in the Guinean population and identified five subtypes. The distribution of different subtypes was not significantly associated with symptomatic status, but consumption of drilling water was found to be a significant risk factor for infection. These findings highlight the need for prevention and control measures in the endemic geographical area.

Evaluation of association with subtypes and alleles of Blastocystis with chronic spontaneous urticaria

Mehmet Aykur et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Blastocystis subtypes and alleles in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). The presence of Blastocystis was found to be significantly higher in CSU patients compared to the control group, and allele 34 of ST3 was associated with CSU. Additionally, a significant association was found between total IgE value and certain subtypes (ST2 and ST3).

Prevalence, Subtype Distribution and Zoonotic Significance of Blastocystis sp. Isolates from Poultry, Cattle and Pets in Northern Egypt

Doaa Naguib et al.

Summary: Despite the widespread distribution of Blastocystis sp., limited epidemiological investigations have been conducted on animal groups that come in contact with humans. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis sp. in animals in Egypt, and found that chickens and cattle had the highest infection rates. Cats and dogs had lower infection rates, suggesting that they are not natural hosts of Blastocystis sp.

An update on the distribution of Blastocystis subtypes in the Americas

Paula Jimenez et al.

Summary: This study provided an update on Blastocystis-positive samples obtained from diverse hosts in the Americas, revealing ST3 as the most common subtype, along with newly identified subtypes ST12, ST13, and ST16 in humans, and ST10, ST14, and ST17 in animals. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the distribution and genetic diversity of Blastocystis in the Americas.

Summary: Blastocystis is a common eukaryotic gastrointestinal symbiont found in humans and animals worldwide, leading to public health concerns. The development of molecular techniques has made detection of the parasite easier. Animals may serve as potential reservoirs for Blastocystis transmission. This study helps to understand the distribution and prevalence of Blastocystis in captive and wild animals globally.

Summary: The gut microbial communities of humans are influenced by the presence of gut protozoa such as Blastocystis and Entamoeba, showing associations with diversity and composition of bacterial microbiota in the gut. Different gut protozoa have distinct impacts on bacterial microbiome diversity, with Blastocystis associated with both richness and evenness, while Entamoeba associated only with richness. Further experimental studies are needed to explore the specific mechanisms of interaction between these protozoa and gut bacteria.
