Introducing the Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC): a resource combining PATRIC, IRD and ViPR

Robert D. Olson et al.

Summary: This report introduces the Bioinformatics Resource Center program established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to aid researchers in analyzing genome sequences and other omics-related data. The merger of PATRIC, IRD, and ViPR BRCs has resulted in the formation of BV-BRC, which offers a unified data model, enhanced visualization and analysis tools, bioinformatics services, and a powerful suite of command line tools for the bacterial and viral research communities.

Adhesion and aggregation properties of Lactobacillaceae strains as protection ways against enteropathogenic bacteria

Anna Zawistowska-Rojek et al.

Summary: This study compared the adhesion and aggregation abilities of different strains belonging to Lactobacillaceae species and found that the adhesion degree depended on the species and origin of the strain. All tested strains showed adhesion to Caco-2 and HT-29 cell lines, with L. rhamnosus and L. acidophilus strains performing the best in competition adherence test. Additionally, all tested lactobacilli strains exhibited varying degrees of auto- and co-aggregation abilities.

Whole genome sequencing for the risk assessment of probiotic lactic acid bacteria

Xianqi Peng et al.

Summary: The use of probiotic bacteria in foods and fermented products can have positive effects on human and animal health. However, there is increasing concern about their safety and potential adverse effects. Currently, in vitro assays are the primary method for evaluating probiotic properties, but they may not be sufficient for high-throughput strain risk assessment. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of individual LAB strains can provide valuable genetic information for assessing safety and understanding strain differences. WGS-based bioinformatics analyses are suggested as an ideal and cost-effective approach for in silico microbial risk evaluation and improving our understanding of LAB strains for food safety and probiotic property evaluation.

Strategies for the Identification and Assessment of Bacterial Strains with Specific Probiotic Traits

Edgar Torres-Maravilla et al.

Summary: In the early 1900s, there was a proposal to improve health and delay senility by manipulating gut microbiota with the bacteria found in yogurt. This idea was reconsidered in 1990 and probiotics have now become a developed area of research with a billion-dollar global industry. In recent decades, there has been increased focus on isolating and characterizing novel probiotic bacteria from fermented foods and dairy products. While most identified probiotic strains belong to lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacterium genus, advances in molecular-based knowledge have allowed the identification and culture of obligatory anaerobic commensal bacteria from the human gut. However, the identification of new strains does not guarantee their probiotic effects and further preclinical studies are necessary.

Biosynthesis and Production of Class II Bacteriocins of Food-Associated Lactic Acid Bacteria

Tingting Zhang et al.

Summary: Bacteriocins are peptides produced by bacteria that inhibit the growth of similar strains. Class II bacteriocins, which are heat-resistant and not extensively modified, are widely distributed in lactic acid bacteria. They have potential applications in food preservation and antibiotic alternatives. Their production is controlled by gene clusters and influenced by fermentation factors. Genetic engineering is used to improve production.

Summary: Microbial food cultures with a long history of safe use in food fermentation do not require specific microbial risk assessments. The assessment of Weissella confusa as a food culture for fermentation and potential probiotic strains involves phenotypic studies, genomic characterization, and bibliographical surveys.
