Virome of Rhipicephalus ticks by metagenomic analysis in Guangdong, southern China

Luanying Guo et al.

Summary: This study identified tick-borne viruses in Guangdong, southern China and found that these viruses are genetically related to strains from countries outside China. Some of the viruses discovered may represent novel viral species. The findings emphasize the importance and necessity of tick-borne virus surveillance.

Identification of a new orthonairovirus associated with human febrile illness in China

Jun Ma et al.

Summary: A new Orthonairovirus, Songling virus (SGLV), was identified in patients bitten by ticks in Heilongjiang Province, China. SGLV displayed similar features to other Orthonairoviruses and formed a unique clade within the Tamdy Orthonairovirus in the Nairoviridae family. Infection with SGLV caused symptoms like headache, fever, depression, fatigue, and dizziness in hospitalized patients, with 69% developing virus-specific antibodies in the acute phase, indicating its association with human febrile illness in China.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus: emerging novel phlebovirus and their control strategy

Mark Anthony Casel et al.

Summary: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne disease caused by a novel phlebovirus, with main symptoms including high fever, low platelet and white blood cell levels, and gastrointestinal problems. Animal models are aiding researchers in understanding the virus and disease, as well as developing treatments and vaccines for SFTS.

Tick virome diversity in Hubei Province, China, and the influence of host ecology

Lin Xu et al.

Summary: This study identified 12 RNA viruses in Haemaphysalis longicornis and Rhipicephalus microplus ticks sampled in Hubei Province in China, revealing diversity and evolution of these viruses, with potential discovery of four novel species. Ecological analyses indicated that host species and feeding status may play a key role in shaping the tick virome structure.

Epidemiological Characteristics of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome from 2010 to 2019 in Mainland China

Xiaoxia Huang et al.

Summary: SFTS is an emerging infectious disease in China with a high fatality rate and person-to-person transmission. A study analyzing 13,824 cases found an increasing trend in the number of cases, with varying laboratory-confirmed rates and a concentration in middle-aged and elderly farmers. The disease, mainly sporadic, has expanded spatially over the years and may require updated diagnostic and reporting criteria for better control.

Rice stripe virus: Exploring Molecular Weapons in the Arsenal of a Negative-Sense RNA Virus

Yi Xu et al.

Summary: Rice stripe disease caused by Rice stripe virus is a devastating plant virus transmitted by the small brown planthopper. Extensive studies have led to significant advances in understanding virus replication, movement, host immunity, epidemiology, and disease management. These insights will contribute to developing novel antiviral therapies and enhancing our understanding of virus-host interactions at the molecular level.

Toyo virus, a novel member of the Kaisodi group in the genus Uukuvirus (family Phenuiviridae) found in Haemaphysalis formosensis ticks in Japan

Daisuke Kobayashi et al.

Summary: Ticks are important vectors that transmit various pathogens, with tick-borne viruses being major agents of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. A novel virus, Toyo virus (TOYOV), was discovered during virome analysis of ticks in Japan, belonging to the Kaisodi group within the Uukuvirus genus. Further research on TOYOV will help in understanding its biological characteristics and etiological importance.
