Bacterial Response to Oxidative Stress and RNA Oxidation

Andre F. Seixas et al.

Summary: Bacteria face oxidative stress caused by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), and have developed strategies to protect cells and combat RNA oxidation. RNA oxidation can lead to structural and functional damage, resulting in harmful consequences for cell survival. However, bacteria have evolved RNA quality control pathways to eliminate oxidized RNA.

Mechanisms of Action of Non-Canonical ECF Sigma Factors

Francisco Javier Marcos-Torres et al.

Summary: Extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma factors are subunits of RNA polymerase specialized in activating the transcription of genes responding to specific environmental conditions. They can be activated by diverse signal-transduction pathways, with the most common mechanism involving a membrane-bound anti-sigma factor. However, there are many ECF sigma factors that exhibit non-canonical regulatory mechanisms.

σP-NagA-L1/L2 Regulatory Circuit Involved in ΔompA299-356-Mediated Increase in b-Lactam Susceptibility in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

Li-Hua Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a link between porin defects and increased susceptibility to β-lactam antibiotics, and reveals a novel sigma P-NagA-L1/L2 regulatory circuit triggered by the loss of OmpA-PG interaction. It extends our understanding of porin defects and antibiotic susceptibility, showing that porin defects can have opposite impacts on antibiotic susceptibility depending on the involvement. Blocking the porin channel role may increase antibiotic resistance, while the loss of porin structure role may increase antibiotic susceptibility.

The two-component regulatory system CenK-CenR regulates expression of a previously uncharacterized protein required for salinity and oxidative stress tolerance in Sinorhizobium meliloti

Eukene O. O. Bensig et al.

Summary: This study identified a new stress resistance gene, srlA, in the nitrogen-fixing bacterium Sinorhizobium (Ensifer) meliloti. The gene regulates salt tolerance and oxidative stress sensitivity, influencing bacterial growth and survival under certain stress-inducing conditions.

σP-NagA-L1/L2 Regulatory Circuit Involved in ΔompA299-356-Mediated Increase in β-Lactam Susceptibility in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

Li-Hua Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals a link between porin defects and increased susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics. The mechanism involves the loss of OmpA-PG interaction, triggering a novel sigma(P)-NagA-L1/L2 regulatory circuit. This research expands our understanding of porin defects and antibiotic susceptibility.

A Major Facilitator Superfamily (MFS) Efflux Pump, SCO4121, from Streptomyces coelicolor with Roles in Multidrug Resistance and Oxidative Stress Tolerance and Its Regulation by a MarR Regulator

Ankita Nag et al.

Summary: Overexpression of efflux pumps, particularly SCO4121, in Streptomyces species contributes to multidrug resistance and increased tolerance against oxidative stress. The adjacent MarR regulator, SCO4122, positively regulates SCO4121 in response to various drugs and HOCl, highlighting novel mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in soil bacteria that may have implications for clinically important pathogens.

SigB-regulated antioxidant functions in gram-positive bacteria

Hoai T. Tran et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress can be lethal for organisms if not responded to properly. Bacterial species activate transcriptional profiles to reduce oxidized components and detoxify harmful metabolites in response to oxidative stress. The general stress response controlled by SigB in Gram positive bacteria helps the adaptation to oxidative stress, with some regulated genes showing antioxidant biochemical activities.
