Rothia mucilaginosa is an anti-inflammatory bacterium in the respiratory tract of patients with chronic lung disease

Charlotte Rigauts et al.

Summary: The presence of Rothia mucilaginosa in the lower airways has an inhibitory effect on pathogen-induced inflammation and is negatively correlated with pro-inflammatory markers in bronchiectasis patients. Mechanistically, R. mucilaginosa inhibits inflammation by reducing NF-kappa B pathway activation. These findings suggest that R. mucilaginosa in the lower airways could potentially mitigate inflammation and impact the severity and progression of chronic respiratory disorders.

The lung microbiome in HIV-positive patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis

Veronica Ueckermann et al.

Summary: This study provides the first description of the lung microbiome in patients co-infected with HIV and PTB, comparing it to an HIV-positive control group. The lung microbiomes of patients with HIV and PTB were found to be distinct from the control group without PTB, showing a loss of microbial diversity.

Quantifying technical confounders in microbiome studies

Theda U. P. Bartolomaeus et al.

Summary: DNA extraction methods have a significant impact on the variability of observed microbiome, comparable to interindividual differences, potentially mimicking microbiome signatures of health and nutrition factors. Collection methods have a relatively small influence on microbiome composition. This study provides insight into technical variables to standardize microbiome quantification procedures in clinical research.

Combinatorial, additive and dose-dependent drug-microbiome associations

Sofia K. Forslund et al.

Summary: The study reveals that drugs have a greater explanatory power for variability in host and gut microbiome features than diseases during the transition from a healthy state to cardiometabolic disease. The effects of single medications, their combinations, and additive effects can shift the metabolome and microbiome towards a healthier state. The study also shows a quantitative relationship between the number of antibiotic courses prescribed and progression towards a microbiome state associated with the severity of cardiometabolic disease, providing new hypotheses for drug-host-microbiome interactions.

Episodic Aspiration with Oral Commensals Induces a MyD88-dependent, Pulmonary T-Helper Cell Type 17 Response that Mitigates Susceptibility to Streptococcus pneumoniae

Benjamin G. Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that aspiration with oral commensals in mice led to short-term lower-airway dysbiosis, but induced a prolonged inflammatory response, including IL-17-producing T cells, lasting at least 14 days. Furthermore, aspiration with oral commensals decreased hosts' susceptibility to respiratory challenge with S. pneumoniae.

The Sputum Microbiome in Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Its Association With Disease Manifestations: A Cross-Sectional Study

Monica R. Ticlla et al.

Summary: The study found that there is an inverse relationship among Streptococcus, Selenomonas, and Fusobacterium in the airway microbiome of TB patients, with the strength of these relationships correlated with Faith's phylogenetic diversity and the accumulation of transient genera. Low BMI was associated with abnormal CXRs and community diversity and composition, mediated by increased abundance of Selenomonas and Fusobacterium. Additionally, detection of herpesviruses and anelloviruses in sputum microbial assemblage was linked to co-infection with HIV.
