Molecular characteristics of a novel hypovirus from Trichoderma harzianum

Jeesun Chun et al.

Summary: A novel mycovirus, named Trichoderma harzianum hypovirus 2 (ThHV2), with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome, has been reported infecting Trichoderma harzianum strain M6. The virus has a large open reading frame encoding a polyprotein with conserved motifs and domains, and phylogenetic analysis revealed its close relationship to the proposed genus Alphahypovirus of the family Hypoviridae.

The Newly Identified Trichoderma harzianum Partitivirus (ThPV2) Does Not Diminish Spore Production and Biocontrol Activity of Its Host

Rongqun Wang et al.

Summary: A new partitivirus, Trichoderma harzianum partitivirus 2 (ThPV2), was discovered in a Trichoderma harzianum strain collected in China. The virus infection enhances the growth and development of the fungus and shows similar effects in inhibiting several important fungal and oomycete pathogens. Additionally, the ThPV2-infected strain shows moderately but significantly improved biocontrol activity against a specific pathogen compared to a cured variant strain.

A novel polymycovirus with defective RNA isolated from the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana Vuillemin

Qin Kang et al.

Summary: A novel double-stranded RNA virus, named Beauveria bassiana polymycovirus 4 (BbPmV-4), was isolated from the muscardine cadaver of an Ostrinia furnacalis larva in China. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that it is closely related to other polymycoviruses, such as BbPmV-2, BbPmV-3, and MoPmV-1.

The Polymycovirus-Mediated Growth Enhancement of the Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria bassiana Is Dependent on Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism

Charalampos Filippou et al.

Summary: Polymycoviridae is a growing family of mycoviruses with non-conventional capsids and multi-segmented, double-stranded RNA genomes. Both BbPmV-3 and BbPmV-1 have similar effects on their fungal hosts, affecting pigmentation, sporulation, and radial growth.

Genome Organizations and Functional Analyses of a Novel Gammapartitivirus from Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IA Strain D122

Meiling Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel mycovirus, RsRV5, was identified in strain D122 of Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IA, causing rice sheath blight. Removal of RsRV5 from D122 led to the development of isogenic strain D122-P with enhanced growth rate, sclerotia production, and pathogenicity. Transcriptome analysis revealed differential gene expression between D122 and D122-P, shedding light on the molecular mechanisms of the interaction between RsRV5 and its host.

Fungal taxonomy and sequence-based nomenclature

Robert Lucking et al.

Summary: Identifying and naming microfungi, especially plant, animal, and human pathogens, remains a challenge. Molecular identification is increasingly used, and environmental metabarcoding is generating a vast amount of sequence data to document global fungal diversity. Solutions for naming taxa known only from sequences are proposed based on bacterial taxonomy methods.
